"What do you mean?"
Yolande just couldn't accept it, gripping the doctor's arm, demanding the explanation I was too shocked to articulate.
"Just go see him," was all the doctor offered.
Yolande clung to the doctor, desperate for more information, until a resident finally elaborated, "The patient's skull was severely fractured, and despite successful suturing, the bleeding in his brain hasn't stopped. Multiple hemorrhages... You should see him now, while there's still time..."
With those harsh words, Yolande finally released the doctor.
She pulled herself together and headed toward the ICU, stopping to glance back at me before she came back to help me on my feet, guiding me into the room.
The lights in the ICU were blinding, stabbing at my eyes.
Ernest lay there, draped in a hospital gown, an oxygen mask strapped to his face, his head swathed in bandages.
I couldn't bring myself to walk closer.
It was Yolande who nudged me forward, "Say what you need to say to him, before... before it's too late."
She had somehow accepted the grim reality of Ernest's failed surgery, her resilience outshining mine.
She guided me to his bedside, and there was Ernest, eyes closed as if in a peaceful slumber.
I used to love watching him sleep, his features serene and handsome, a quiet moment where I could be unabashedly affectionate. But now, I was terrified of this stillness.
"Ernest," Yolande's voice cracked as she called his name.
He remained motionless, and I was too scared to even touch his hand.
"Ernest, wake up, Felicia's here," she tried again.

Good read. I like it when the protagonist is awesome, smart and straightforward as Felicia....
