I tried to get closer to him once again, when suddenly Yolande let out a sob, "Ernest."
My heart felt like it was being torn apart. Slowly, I lifted my head to look at Ernest, only to see his eyes gently closed, his eyelashes no longer fluttering, his other hand that was resting by the bed had gone limp.
"Ernest," I whispered his name, but he didn't respond to me anymore.
Shaking my head in denial, I cupped his face in my hands, "Ernest, Ernest...you haven't finished your words. Keep talking... Ernest, say something, you..."
The words that followed were choked off; I couldn't bring myself to speak them. Instead, I leaned down to kiss him, his nose, his eyes, his cheeks, his lips...
But no matter how much I kissed him, he never responded again.
He would never say, "Licia, stop it..." like he used to.
"Ernest, don't leave me, you're all I have..."
When I screamed those words, my chest felt utterly hollow.
This despair was even worse than when I lost my parents. Perhaps back then, I was too young to fully grasp the concept of death. Having experienced the loss of my parents, facing Ernest's departure now filled me with fear and helplessness.
In this world, there was no longer that person, when you think of him, longing for him, he's no longer visible, no longer within reach...
I shook Ernest in my anguish, but all I could do was cry.
My tears fell on Ernest's face, rolling down his cheeks as if they were his own tears.
I cried myself to unconsciousness beside Ernest. When I woke up, I found myself lying alone on a cold hospital bed, with nothing around me but the harsh white light from the window.
Flashes of last night's darkness, Ernest's face, passed before my eyes...
