If he really lost his limb because of this, I’d owe him big time, and I didn’t want any more entanglements with him. I could only try to persuade him.
“It’s not as bad as all that. A few more rounds of physical therapy, and I’ll be as good as new,” he said, his face so pale, his voice barely above a whisper.
Stubborn as ever, I didn’t push. He looked at me, “You coming back has already made me feel better.”
I was at a loss for words.
I got his point, but he quickly changed the subject, “Jefferson’s been asking about you. He was about ready to call in a missing persons report.”
I’d cut off all contact these past few days. I knew people were worried.
“Is he coming by today?” I asked, playing along.
“Not sure. I’ll give him a call,” Conrad said, reaching for the phone.
But he seemed to forget about his injured arm, and the sudden movement made him wince in pain.
I reached out, steadying his bandaged arm, “No need to call. I’m back now. We’ll run into each other sooner or later.”
Conrad didn't say anything, either from the pain or something else.
“Should I call the doctor?” I asked.
He shook his head gently, then licked his lips, “Could you get me a glass of water?”
I handed it to him, and after a couple of sips, the pain seemed to fade from his face.
"Dustin come to see you lately?" I brought up.
“A couple of times.”
“I ran into him yesterday,” I said, catching Conrad’s attention. “At the diner,” I added.

Good read. I like it when the protagonist is awesome, smart and straightforward as Felicia....
