It appeared to be yet another mystery, and the less I knew, the better off I'd be.
Ernest gently kissed my forehead, saying, "Don't worry. I won't let anything happen to me because... my little monster needs me."
Little monster?!
What an adorable nickname. I immediately changed my social media handle to that.
Jefferson was the first to notice and sent me a message right away: "Who are we targeting?"
Monsters aren't about targeting anyone; they're about standing their ground.
I hadn't heard from him in a while, especially since he returned from Houston. The last I heard, he had sold his pool hall, but his current activities were a mystery to me.
I knew how tough things were in Houston, so his decision didn't surprise me.
"Fight the demons!" I replied to Jefferson with those three words.
He sent another message: "How've you been lately?"
If he'd been following the online updates, he would have known. His question indicated he hadn't been.
Me: "Not bad!"
Jefferson: "Felicia, I'm sorry. I've owed you those words."
Reading his message, I paused in thought, then he sent another: "For causing you to lose Ernest."
He believed it was all his fault, unaware that he was merely a pawn in someone else's scheme.
Me: "You did nothing wrong. It was fate, and perhaps it's for the best."
I had no idea what Jefferson was doing these days, but I sensed he had distanced himself from the chaos. Otherwise, he'd be up to date on my situation.
So, I decided not to burden him further. As for Ernest being alive, that was something I couldn't disclose.

Good read. I like it when the protagonist is awesome, smart and straightforward as Felicia....
