Yates walked over and wrapped his arms around her, whispering, "I'm sorry..."
In all the time they'd been together, he'd said sorry more often than he'd said he loved her.
"Then just go," Fanny replied, gently prying his arms away.
Yates kissed the side of her neck. "I'll try to be back for lunch."
"Don't bother," Fanny said, meeting his eyes. "Yates, we need to break up."
Yates was taken aback. "Fanny..."
"Yates, Felicia's uncle and aunt passed away yesterday," Fanny said, pausing for a moment.
Yates frowned. "But... her aunt's condition wasn't that bad..."
"They chose to end their lives together," Fanny interrupted, "holding hands."
The pain on Fanny's face was unmistakable, something Yates had never seen before. He'd sensed something was off with her since last night but had been too exhausted to ask.
So this was why she was hurting.
"Why would they do that? I told them there was hope, that they could wait for the surgery," Yates murmured.
Fanny looked at him, "Maybe they didn’t want to just survive. Maybe they wanted to really live or not at all."
Yates's lips parted, "Fanny, do you blame me?"
He had visited her uncle and aunt. If only he had made time for the surgery, perhaps they wouldn't have chosen that path.
Fanny shook her head. "No, I don't."

Good read. I like it when the protagonist is awesome, smart and straightforward as Felicia....
