"Did you really break up with Yates, and he didn’t say anything?" I asked Fanny after she told me, a bit surprised.

Fanny chuckled softly. "Maybe he’s just as tired as I am. When you’re single, you can do whatever you want without anyone breathing down your neck, no strings attached."

Clearly, she was venting.

"So, was breaking up a spur-of-the-moment thing? Just to rile him up?" I probed further.

She shook her head. "No, I thought it through."

I raised an eyebrow, and she laughed. "Seriously, ever since I asked him if we could move back home, I’ve been pondering what I truly want."

"Honestly, isn't what every woman wants from love and marriage just a sense of stability and support? If he can't give me that, I might as well be on my own. Why should I cling to this relationship?" Fanny asked quietly.

I teased her, "To satisfy your physical needs?"

Fanny laughed again. "If finding a man was just about that, it'd be easy. You could pay for it, with all sorts of options, and keep changing it up."

I laughed along, "Dr. Willis would definitely raise an eyebrow at that."

Despite the playful banter, I couldn't deny the truth in her words. "Fanny, whatever decision you make, I’m here for you. But I know how gut-wrenching it can be to end things. If you’re feeling down, I’m just a call away. We could always drown our sorrows in a bottle."

"Okay, I'll let you know if I need that," Fanny nudged her head against mine. "Right now, though, I need your company for something else."

"What’s up?"

"It’s my grandpa’s birthday today, and I can’t skip it anymore," Fanny confessed, looking a bit troubled.

Her parents had been urging her to visit her grandparents, but she always found excuses. If she bailed again, her mom might just disown her.

"Why would you want to skip it?" I asked playfully. "Is your grandpa a big scary monster?"
