No wonder Conrad was missing from the wake; turns out Dustin had him locked up somewhere. It was just like Fanny had predicted—Dustin was pulling strings even at his own father's funeral.
With Allen already dealt with and now Conrad out of the picture, Dustin had the floor all to himself. There's a saying that a man has to be ruthless to hold his ground, but Dustin, the man I always thought of as gentle and polite, had turned into someone unrecognizable, a heartless demon.
"Felicia, only you can save him now," Jacqueline sobbed, her words heavy with desperation.
She whispered it to me in a way that Dustin wouldn’t notice, but I knew it was because she feared ending up like Conrad. She had to play blind, using this chance to plead for help.
It wasn’t just fear of her son; Jacqueline had unfulfilled wishes. Herschel had been the love of her life, her rock, and with him gone, life and death didn’t matter much to her anymore. She just wanted to be there for him one last time.
I comforted Jacqueline, then quietly moved over to Fanny. "I'll distract Dustin. You figure out a way to get to the underground garage and find Conrad."
Fanny looked startled. "Me?"
She was a surgeon, not a rescuer. But it was just the two of us here; apart from her, there was no one else who could help.
Fanny hesitated for just a second before nodding in agreement.
At that moment, Jacqueline played along perfectly, fainting dramatically. Dustin panicked, scooping her up and carrying her to the bedroom, with Fanny, the doctor, naturally called in to assist.
Fanny and I exchanged a quick glance, and just like that, we swapped roles. She would now keep Dustin occupied while I went to save Conrad.

Good read. I like it when the protagonist is awesome, smart and straightforward as Felicia....
