Yates glanced up and noticed the newcomer, subtly withdrawing his hand, "Uncle."

“Yates, you can just call me Sinclair now,” Sinclair reminded him of the changed dynamics since he and Fanny were no longer connected in that way.

He then turned his attention to Fanny. “If you’ve got a moment, I’d like to talk.”

“Sure,” Fanny agreed, nodding at Yates before following Sinclair away.

Trailing behind Sinclair like a little shadow, Fanny looked up at him. “Uncle, is this about my parents?”

Ever since Fanny had returned, her parents had been urging her to move back home, saying it would ease their minds. Even her grandparents were in on it.

“They wanted me to ask if you've given any more thought to their request,” Sinclair said, confirming Fanny’s suspicions.

“Uncle, I really don’t want to move back in with them. I’ve been living on my own for years now, and with my night shifts and late calls, it would just disturb them,” Fanny explained, trying to sound as considerate as possible.

Sinclair said nothing, his expression unreadable, but Fanny had a feeling her excuses wouldn’t pass muster with him.

Her parents, especially her mother, trusted Sinclair’s judgment more than anyone else’s. If he sided with her, she wouldn’t need to come up with any excuses.

“Uncle,” Fanny tugged gently at his sleeve, “I’m at an age where living with my parents isn't ideal. Plus, I’ve been independent for so long, I really don’t want to go back to being watched over.”

“They just want what’s best for you,” Sinclair replied in a typical elder’s tone.

Technically, he was her elder, even though she called him Uncle; to Fanny, he was more like a peer.

“I know they mean well, but I’m an adult now. I need my own space,” Fanny insisted, pausing for a moment. “Just like you, Uncle. You live on your own too and don’t stay with our grandparents.”

Sinclair raised an eyebrow, “Are you giving me advice now?”
