After all these years married to Landon, it was the first time Kristin had seen him so emotionally charged. Quickly applying her moisturizer, she turned to face him and said, "Jason's got a good head on his shoulders, plus he's got folks backing him up. Drew's gone over there, and Grayson and the rest are his mates; he's got his own crew, so you don't need to worry too much."
"Not bringing up the past, not falling out with you or Cole, Jason's already doing pretty well."
Landon was still at a loss: "I know, it's just that trying to do something meaningful feels so hard, and keeping this family together is so tough."
Kristin, rubbing in her skincare product, said, "Life's messy for everyone, it's the same in every household."
Though she hadn't been paying much attention to Landon these past two years, seeing him in a bad mood today, Kristin couldn't help but comfort him.
So at this moment, Landon felt truly relieved and warmed by her care.
Looking straight at Kristin, he said, "Kristin, there's something else, something I've been wanting to tell you, but I just didn't know how to say it right."
Landon’s helplessness and guilt were palpable. Kristin rolled her eyes at him unexpectedly: "You're trying to tell me that Estrella is your biological daughter, aren't you?"
Landon's eyes widened in shock as he looked at Kristin: "Kristin, how did you find out about this?"
The matter had been tacitly avoided by everyone for the past two years, keeping Kristin in the dark. He hadn’t expected her to know.
Landon's astonishment met Kristin's disdainful retort: "You think I'm some naive girl like Autumn, clueless and not bothering to dig deeper?"
Breaking the silence, Landon hurriedly explained: "Kristin, I assure you, I've been straightforward and honest out there. I wanted a child, but all those arrangements were made by Mr. Thompson, I never even met the other party or knew what she looked like."
Landon's panic was met with Kristin's sigh: "I know, I've looked into it. The person Mr. Thompson found was reliable, a decent person who agreed to it because of family issues at the time."
"She's already married, her husband's decent, and the child is doing well."
Kristin wasn't naive. When Jason's paternity was questioned, she connected the dots and guessed Estrella was his daughter.
Further investigation had confirmed her suspicions.
She even found out that the woman had tried to reach out to Estrella in the past, oblivious to Landon, a truly innocent woman.
Mr. Thompson had chosen wisely.
With Kristin's calm demeanor, Landon guiltily said, "Kristin, I'm sorry. I was selfish. I don't have the selflessness Cole has."
Looking at Landon, Kristin took a deep breath and said, "Not everyone can be as upright and selfless as Cole. People are inherently selfish."
"I also know that when you brought Jason home, it was because you didn't want me to be heartbroken, fearing I couldn't bear the pain."
"But honestly, if you had told me the truth back then, that the baby was gone and I couldn't have any more, I probably wouldn't have made it through, might have followed the baby."
Kristin's words brought tears to Landon's eyes. She was right; learning of the baby's loss, he was more worried about Kristin than grieving for the child, fearing she wouldn't survive the truth, so he brought Jason home.
That lie lasted thirty years.
Silence fell between them before Kristin spoke, "It's all fate, I guess. It was because of Hans and Paloma's negligence that I miscarried, leading to a premature birth, so they compensated me with their own child."
At their age, what more could she do?
Moreover, Landon's deception was out of concern for her well-being, fearing she might succumb to despair.
Thus, she chose to reconcile with herself and treasure what she had.
Anything else would only cause her more pain.
The sound of running water from the bathroom was a subtle backdrop as Kristin picked up the sweater she was knitting beside her. It was a labor of love for Isaac and Estrella, and she had plans to knit another one for Jason as well.

Meanwhile, Jason was already on the road with Estrella, driving down the mountain. Their car moved at a leisurely pace on the asphalt, flanked on either side by towering pine trees. Jason felt an unusual sense of calm, as if he and Estrella had escaped to a hidden paradise, a secluded world meant just for the two of them.
His hands firmly on the wheel, he glanced at the passenger seat and saw Estrella, curled up and facing him, fast asleep.
Lifting his right hand from the wheel, Jason gently brushed Estrella's cheek with the back of his hand, pleased that she hadn't turned her back to him.
At eleven o'clock, the car came to a stop outside the Dorvold family's home. Jason didn't wake Estrella. Instead, he adjusted his seat so he could lie next to her, watching her sleep.
It felt like a throwback to two years ago when they still shared a bed.
He lifted his hand and lightly touched Estrella's long eyelashes. Suddenly, she opened her eyes, stayed perfectly still, and asked, "Jason, what's happened?"
