Jared stared at the back of the woman who had appeared out of nowhere.
She looked incredibly familiar, but for a moment he could not place her.
Gwendolyn studied the stranger, then asked Jared, "Who is she?"
Jared narrowed his eyes at the newcomer. "Not sure... but I've definitely seen her before."
"Mr. Chance, it's been a while."
The woman turned and smiled at him.
Jared froze.
Then recognition hit him all at once.
"Violet?"
"That's me." Violet smiled.
Jared could hardly believe it.
This really was Violet—the woman whose soul remnant had once been attached to a tree on a deserted island in the Ethereal Realm.
Back then, he had learned that she belonged to the celestial realm's Seven Fairies—and he had been the one who saved her.
He never expected to meet her here.
Gwendolyn glanced at him. "So you two have met?"
"We have. We know each other pretty well." Jared nodded repeatedly.
"Mr. Chance, take a rest," Violet said. "I'll deal with them for you."
Then she turned slowly toward Aureon and the others.
Her expression cooled.
"Do you want to come at me one at a time, or all together?"
Aureon frowned as he looked at Violet.
He could not sense her cultivation.
That meant he had no idea what realm she had reached.
"Who will fight her?" he demanded. "Kill this woman."
Until he knew what she was capable of, Aureon had no intention of making the first move himself.
"I will."
A figure in blood-red suddenly pushed herself upright from the mass of kneeling Demonic Cultivators.
She stood with deliberate flourish, as though eager to demonstrate loyalty to her new master.
Dust clung to her crimson robe. She brushed it down with exaggerated care, pulled a short dark-red blade free at her waist, and marched past Aureon into the open space separating the two sides.
"Your Majesty, allow me to remove this problem for you!"
She spoke loudly enough for everyone in the valley to hear, her tone full of the eager flattery of someone desperate to prove herself.
She had already forgotten how pathetic she had looked when she knelt and begged for mercy.
She had forgotten the humility with which she had insisted she had supported peace with the celestials from the beginning.
Now that she stood on Aureon's side, she believed she had found another path to survival—perhaps even a path to status and power.
She lifted her chin and looked Violet up and down.
The woman in purple appeared to be in her twenties, with a cool, refined face and an almost otherworldly presence. A purple longsword rested in her hand, its blade covered in a soft, flowing glow.
The light was not dazzling, but it possessed a strange depth that made the heart tighten.
"A little girl like you thinks she can stand in our way?"
The blood-robed woman sneered and spun her short blade, drawing a dark-red arc through the air.
"Today, I'll cut down an ignorant little—"
She never finished.
Violet moved.
She was so fast that no one present saw how she attacked.
A streak of purple flashed through the air, brief and brilliant like a meteor cutting through the night or lightning splitting open a bank of clouds.
