Over in the other ward, Ernest’s condition took a turn for the worse. He even lost consciousness at one

point. Although Joseph managed to bring him back, every doctor there knew the outlook was grim.

“Dr. Loughlin, what’s the point of dragging this out? Ernest should be transferred to Croma Hospital, where he can have access to the best medical resources available. That’s the truly responsible thing to

do for the patient,” Joseph said as he entered Walt’s office.

“That’s not a decision I can make, and you know it. We work in a hospital. Whoever comes to us for treatment, we do our absolute best.

“Whether it’s the Ashmore family or just some regular folks, we have no right to interfere with their freedom of choice,” Walt replied helplessly.

Joseph left it at that. “Fine. You’re the director. What you say goes in this hospital.”

“So, that patient named Yvonne… Did you examine or treat her?” Walt probed.

“I know you’re personally in charge of her case, and it’s not anyone else’s place to step in. Without your consent, I wouldn’t overstep.

“That said, her condition makes it pretty obvious she’s been beaten and abused. This is potentially a criminal matter. I think you should notify the police about it.”

“The patient hasn’t chosen to report it, so we should respect her wishes.”

“You’re being awfully secretive. Who sent her here? Was it Frank or Cora?”

“I know you’re curious, but honestly, I don’t know either. Like I just told you, I’m a doctor. I focus on doing my job well, and I don’t concern myself with anything beyond that.”

Joseph sighed inwardly when he heard this. He had overestimated Walt in the past. He had thought that, given Walt’s relationship with Bernard, Walt might help him with his divorce. Now it seemed that telling him everything did absolutely nothing.

“Let’s get back to medical topics, then. Have you considered the proposal I sent you last night?”

Joseph changed the subject. The night before, acting on a request that had come through the medical assistance network, he had proposed taking in a pair of conjoined twins and performing a separation surgery.

“Our hospital has never performed such a procedure before. None of us has any experience with it. Are you sure you want to take that risk?”

Walt looked at Joseph skeptically. He wasn’t particularly pleased that Joseph was ambitious to a fault and utterly confident in his abilities.
