A Man with Nerves of Steel (Joseph Hart) novel Chapter 137

Chapter 137

Joseph insisted on finishing the surgery. After all, the patient had specifically sought him out because they trusted him. For more than ten years, he’d put his family ahead of his career.

He’d relegated his ambitions and professional advancement to second place, only to be repaid with betrayal and deception. He had no intention of making that mistake again.

The operation was a success. Joseph gained valuable experience, and more importantly, he could give the patient’s family a satisfactory result. By the time everything was finished, it was already late, so he prepared to leave work.

Walt appeared once again and handed him a phone. “It’s your mother-in-law. You should at least take the call.”

Joseph accepted the phone, but immediately hung up. “Dr. Loughlin, stay out of my family’s affairs. If they’re looking for me, just tell them I’m busy. I don’t care how important it is. They can wait until I’m finished.”

Walt frowned. “Joseph, there’s no need to be like this. You should try to keep the peace if you can.”

Walt felt like Joseph was becoming very bitter and stubborn, which he disliked.

“You keep asking questions you already know the answer to. It’s really easy to preach when you’re not the one having to live through it,” Joseph spat before turning around and leaving.

After leaving the hospital, Joseph didn’t go home. Instead, he headed to a quiet lounge bar. After finding a secluded corner to sit at, he ordered a light cocktail and listened to the live singer performing on stage.

About an hour later, the person he had been waiting for finally appeared. She was a familiar stranger. The woman had entered his dormitory and slept with him. She should never have had anything to do with him, yet her actions dragged them into a tangled mess.

Her voice trembled slightly. “Dr. Hart, my name is Lacey Shaw. I’m the woman you were trying to find through Yvonne. I’m also the one who wronged you. But you have to stay calm. If you try to hurt me, the plainclothes police officer over there will arrest you immediately.”

Even as she spoke, she could feel the fury radiating from Joseph’s eyes. That was why she revealed her trump card in a panic. Without the protection of the police, she never would have dared come here alone.

Joseph followed her line of sight. Sure enough, a woman was sitting nearby. Her posture was too straight and disciplined compared to the relaxed customers around her.

Joseph scoffed. “You finally showed your face, you cheap slut. Why didn’t you continue hiding?”
