Chapter 138
Unable to make any progress with Joseph, Lacey eventually had no choice but to leave.
Back in the car, she turned to Yvonne, who had been listening to the conversation through an earpiece.” Looks like Joseph isn’t that easy to fool. He won’t take the bait. What do we do now?”
Yvonne’s expression was grim. “We’ll have to find another approach. My concern is that if we push things too far, it’ll be difficult to explain things to Cora.”
Their original plan had been to catch Joseph saying something incriminating and use it against him. But it was obvious that the strategy had failed.
In truth, their greatest assets were their beauty and the specialized training they’d received in handling and influencing men. But to use those methods against Cora’s husband? Neither of them would ever dare to do it.
Lacey refused to give up. “I’ll try talking to him again. He’s a doctor, after all. He can’t be that bad a person. Maybe tonight just wasn’t the right opportunity.”
She hadn’t expected her first proper interaction with Joseph to end in such complete failure. The results deeply irked her. Against her will, her thoughts drifted back to that night-the exhilarating feeling of being with him and the overwhelming intensity. A part of her wanted to experience it again.
Yvonne said, “He’s a doctor and a good man, but that doesn’t mean he can’t also be a devil.”
Soon afterward, the two women drove away.
Joseph remained where he was. Sure enough, the person he had really been waiting for appeared.
It was Grace.
Ever since he met Mavis, he had suspected that she would continue keeping an eye on him. Grace’s arrival in Jenton made her the obvious candidate to carry out that task. So, wherever he went, Grace was probably watching.
The moment Grace showed herself, he knew his guess had been correct.
But it wasn’t entirely correct.
Grace had indeed been observing him. But Joseph didn’t know that this lounge bar was one of her operational bases in Jenton. Whenever her personnel arrived in the city, she arranged for them to use this location.
She had been watching from a distance for quite some time. When she noticed that Joseph was lingering long after Lacey left, she assumed that Joseph knew she was there. That was why Grace appeared.
“Dr. Hart, it’s a pleasure seeing someone as busy as you coming here for a drink,” Grace said.
Joseph glanced at the glass. “This barely qualifies as alcohol. And I didn’t come here for the drinks. Look, I finally managed to get you to come see me.”
