Chapter 147
Grace watched Cora leave, and she noticed an unfamiliar sedan parked nearby. Cora had obviously left someone behind to keep an eye on her.
Grace called Mavis. “Cora has her eyes on me. She came over herself to warn me. She told me to leave Jenton within 24 hours. Looks like I was too hasty when I gave those things to Joseph.”
Mavis didn’t answer in a hurry, taking her time to think before she answered, “Do as you see fit. Whether you want to leave or to stay, I’ll support you.” 1
Grace knew what Mavis was implying. “Then I’ll stay.”
Mavis nodded. “Keep in touch with Joseph. He’s a good man.”
After ending the call, Grace thought about Mavis’ determination to pair her with Joseph.
Her husband had disappeared five years ago. Even though the chances of him being alive were nearly zero, she had never agreed to have him legally declared dead. As long as there was no death certificate, there was still hope.
Meanwhile, Joseph still hadn’t divorced Cora. They were still married. How could a married woman and a married man possibly end up together?
The whole situation was just ridiculous and troublesome. But with Mavis’ personality, once she set her eyes on Joseph, she wouldn’t change her mind easily. Mavis definitely didn’t do this on a sudden whim, either. There had to be a reason behind it.
It had to be that the cholera poisoning incident had revealed some signs of danger. Mavis might want Grace to stay away from that storm and send Grace over to Joseph because of it.
The thought sent a chill through her, and she instinctively wrapped her arms around herself. In the end, she realized there was no one she could truly rely on except herself.
After thinking it over repeatedly, she texted Joseph to ask to meet up or at least talk on the phone.
Joseph was buried in emergency cases all morning. It wasn’t until noon that he had the time to see Grace’s message. He immediately called her.
Grace said, “Joseph, Cora came to see me this morning. She knows I was the one who gave you those photographs.”
Joseph was shocked. “I’ve never told anyone where I got those photos. How did she find out?”
He’d said it was an anonymous delivery, and Cora had believed it.
