A Man with Nerves of Steel (Joseph Hart) novel Chapter 158

Chapter 158

After wrapping up his work that afternoon, Joseph got a call from Dolly, who insisted that he make a trip to the sanatorium.

After handing off his duties, he headed over.

Dolly greeted him with a warm smile, fussing over him like an older sister. She expressed some regret that he had returned to the ICU department instead of joining her, though she was genuinely happy for him as well.

The person who wanted to see him was a retired senior official whom Joseph had previously treated with acupuncture. He knew that before retirement, the man had served as a key advisor to one of the state’s top leaders.

After a round of acupuncture, the old man seemed to feel immediate relief and visibly relaxed. Once the treatment/ was finished, he dismissed everyone else and kept only Joseph behind.

He said, “Dr. Hart, this old body of mine may be worn out, but the country still hasn’t forgotten me. I’ve been arranged to transfer to a rehabilitation center in Croma. Tell me, have you ever considered moving here?”

Joseph smiled politely, “Thank you for thinking so highly of me, but I’d prefer to stay here at Jenton.”

At that point, Joseph more or less understood why the old man had wanted to see him. The man was trying to take him to Croma.

The man sighed. “Dolly and I knew you would say that. Still, take the night to think it over. There’s no need to rush to answer me. The flight leaves tomorrow afternoon. You could board with us then.”

Joseph politely declined once again. If he’d truly wanted to go to Croma, he would have accepted Mavis’ offer long ago.

The man said, “To be honest, I’m not inviting you to Croma for my treatment. I’m just trying to help you avoid the storm that’s coming. You’re Bernard’s son-in-law, and the Lowells are at the center of that storm. If you remain here in Jenton, you’ll get swept into it sooner or later.”

Joseph raised an eyebrow. “Really? What do you mean by that?”

“The elites from Croma have set their sights on Jenton, and they’ve already begun making moves. The Lowells are the wealthiest family in Jenton, so they’ll naturally be the first targets. As a part of that family, you won’t be able to avoid getting sucked into it.”

Grace, Dave, and Yvette were probably all only the visible pieces on the board. There were undoubtedly many more hidden players operating in the shadows. Joseph’s expression turned grave. “Can you answer me honestly? Will the Lowells be able to survive this?”

The old man shook his head. “The Lowells may be newly crowned as Jenton’s richest, but they lack foundation when compared to the giants in Croma. I estimate that the Lowells will go through some massive changes before the New Year arrives.”
