Neither of them was in the mood to keep arguing. The children were home, after all.

Once the girls were asleep, Joseph and Cora returned to their bedroom. Joseph noticed Cora’s phone screen lighting up repeatedly with incoming calls. She ignored every one of them.

Joseph said with a faint smile, “Your man seems pretty eager to get a hold of you. If you want to keep him company, just go. Right, I forgot. If you want to work overtime, you should go.”

The sight only strengthened his conviction that Cora was having an affair.

Cora snapped, “What nonsense are you talking about? You’re my only man. There’s no one else.”

Cora switched her phone off. Whatever Frank or the Patron wanted, it could wait until tomorrow.

She then started to tease Joseph, stirring his desires. Right as they were at the peak of passion, she held Joseph tightly. “You keep saying I have a lover. Aren’t you worried I might actually find one someday? What would you do if that happened?”

Joseph replied, “Other than divorcing you and letting the two of you be together, what could I possibly do? Cora, I’d rather die than be cheated on.”

Cora gripped him tighter. “Why are you getting so worked up? There’s no one else but you! No more talking, just love me as hard as you can!”

Afraid of ruining the fragile peace between them, Cora silenced him with a kiss and continued.

The next morning, Joseph reported to work as usual. In the elevator, Joseph bumped into Marvin.

The man didn’t even bother to exchange pleasantries. Instead, he stepped out of the elevator and waited for the next one rather than ride with Joseph.

During a meeting, Walt received a message that caused him to gasp. Without wasting time, he gathered Joseph and several of the hospital’s most authoritative specialists. Together, they waited outside the ICU for about five minutes before an ambulance arrived.

When Joseph took over the incoming patient, even he was surprised. It was Sirius Lowell, the old patriarch of the Lowell family.

The elderly man was already unconscious, and his bluish complexion and shallow breathing were both signs that he wasn’t in good condition.

A preliminary examination showed that his pulse was equally alarming.
