Chapter 184
The next day, Joseph still hadn’t returned. Selena was furious. She shoved the huge birthday cake off the table. The sudden outburst shocked everyone.
Cora lost her temper, wanting to slap Selena across the face. The happy atmosphere was ruined in an instant.
Helen quickly pulled Selena into her arms and hurried her back to her room. Meanwhile, Natalie remained calm. She was upset too, but she felt that the family needed to accept and adjust to life without Joseph.
After all, he wasn’t her biological father, and sooner or later, Cora would bring her biological father into their lives.
Kimberly looked innocent. She had been waiting for cake, only for Selena to explode. She neither cried nor complained. Instead, she got off her chair and found a clean piece of cake before eating it.
Normally, whether it was Cora and Joseph or Bernard and Helen, everyone strictly limited how much dessert Natalie, Selena, and Kimberly could have. Such opportunities, where no one was stopping them from eating cake were rare.
“Are all of you trying to drive me insane?” Cora snapped. She glanced at Kimberly and barely restrained herself from exploding. She got up and returned to her room.
Immediately, she contacted Fiona and the others. Yet, there was still no definite news about Joseph. If he hadn’t continued replying to work emails, and if the IP addresses from his online activity hadn’t shown he was overseas, she might have already reported him missing.
Cora shouted, “If you’ve got the nerve, don’t come back at all!”
After calming herself down, she left the room. Running a household was exhausting, but it still needed to be managed properly.
Several more days passed, and Joseph still hadn’t returned. Cora still couldn’t find him. That day, Cora was working in the office. The military-style pressure from Croma had already subsided, but now came the economic offense.
Lowell Group’s rivals were gradually moving in to absorb Jenton’s business interests. This was a battle fought by invisible hands. There was no bloodshed, yet it was just as ruthless.
Fiona knocked on the door and entered while saying, “Cora, there are two matters. First, Yvette has been arrested because someone reported her for embezzlement and misuse of public funds. She was taken away directly from the hospital.”
“Yvette was nothing more than a pawn. She came in trying to put things on fire, but she had no foundation to stand on. Someone set her up. Even if she survives this, she’ll come out badly damaged. Who did it?” Cora asked.
