A Man with Nerves of Steel (Joseph Hart) novel Chapter 185

Chapter 185

“When is Dad coming back?” Selena asked the moment Cora got into the car.

“Tomorrow. What are you planning this time?” Cora questioned, unable to hold back any longer.

“I just miss Dad. I’m tired. I’m going to sleep,” said Selena before closing her eyes. With her innocent and calm expression, it was impossible to tell what was going on inside her head.

When Cora saw Fiona shake her head, she suppressed the irritation and anger within her. After sending Selena home, she stayed there herself, waiting for Joseph’s return.

Cora only received confirmation that Joseph had taken a cab straight to the hospital and performed surgery the next day.

“After all that traveling, your first stop isn’t home, but it’s the operating room? What is wrong with you?” Cora couldn’t hide her displeasure. Unable to wait any longer, she headed to the hospital.

Joseph had just completed an extremely difficult pancreatic tumor surgery. As always, the surgery had been perfect. His colleagues surrounded him with praise, but he felt neither pride nor joy.

From his examination, he could tell that the patient was weak. The patient wouldn’t survive more than three years.

The patient was only 40 years old. He was the pillar of his family. Once he fell, the already struggling household would be left with nothing but a widow and children trying to survive on their own.

After arranging the patient’s post-operative care, Joseph didn’t have meetings with Dave. Instead, he headed straight for the parking lot with his luggage. When he saw that Cora had come to pick him up, he didn’t argue. He just got into her car and headed home.

“What happened to you?” Cora questioned. She hadn’t expected Joseph’s skin to become dark from the sun. His fair skin was completely gone. He even shaved his head bald, and only a thin layer of new growth had started to appear. He looked like an entirely different person.

“I just changed my looks and mood,” answered Joseph casually.

By contrast, Cora looked exactly the same. She was beautiful. Of course, he didn’t need to think about it. While he had been gone,

she certainly hadn’t lacked men. Who knew which man she had been spending her time with?

“Where have you been these past few weeks?” Cora asked.
