The next day, Joseph arrived at the hospital at his usual time. He had just finished organizing his schedule when Mason called. Someone wanted to transfer Frank to the hospital, and Joseph was asked to handle the room assignment.

He found it a little strange that the Croma faction had actually kept Frank alive.

When he saw Frank and reviewed his medical records, he immediately determined that Frank had lost his ability to speak.

Dave summoned Joseph to his office and brought up Frank’s case. “I’ve received instructions from above. They want Frank in a condition where he can talk again. Do you think you’re up to it?”

As he thought back to what Grace had told him, it all clicked. Although the Croma faction had used dirty tactics to wipe out the Ashmore family in one swift move, what they ultimately ended up with was only an empty shell, not the family’s fortune.

“Keeping him alive isn’t hard, but getting him to speak again will require further examinations and consultations. Considering that top doctors and specialists have probably already tried to treat him with no success, I’d say the odds aren’t great for us either.”

“That was my response to them as well. We’ll just do our best.”

Just as Joseph was leaving, Dave asked, “Joseph, w-why did you keep me on?”

This was the source of Dave’s anxiety over the past several days. He belonged to the same faction as Yvette. Now that Yvette had fallen from power, he had expected to be affected as well, but nothing had happened to him.

He had clearly underestimated Joseph. Joseph wasn’t what he had imagined before coming here.

He thought Joseph was just a dull, honest doctor who only knew how to treat patients and knew nothing about workplace politics, let alone power games.
