Chapter 200
That afternoon, a critically ill patient with heart issues was brought into the ICU and needed emergency surgery immediately.
Joseph and his assistant worked hard until evening to finish the first phase of the surgery, but even then, the patient had not yet fully pulled through.
With the family waiting anxiously, the weight of their medical responsibilities kept Joseph and his team from leaving the department.
It wasn’t until 8:00 pm that the patient finally stabilized. Joseph gave the family some instructions before getting off work.
Cora was already waiting in the parking lot for him. She told Joseph to get in, and upon seeing how exhausted he looked, she said, “Honey, you’re working too hard. Why don’t you just quit this job?”
“This is the life of a doctor. Besides, I’m now responsible for the hospital’s medical affairs as well. Being able to leave at this hour is already something to be thankful for.
“Cora, let’s not talk about the issue with Nat and Selena for a moment. Our lifestyles just aren’t in sync right now, and it won’t be in the future. You should go live your extravagant life with your lovers, and I’ll live my life working like a dog. We should just stay out of each other’s way. So, let’s just get a divorce.”
“I think you’ve seriously worked yourself silly with how much nonsense you’re spouting! I don’t have lovers-I only have you!
“And I won’t divorce you! I came to pick you up, thinking I’d take you out for a nice late-night snack to reward you. But you just had to bring it up again. We’re going straight home. I’m annoyed.”
Cora furrowed her brows. She was trying to show concern for Joseph, but she hadn’t expected him to talk about divorce every time he opened his mouth.
“Cora, you can’t run away forever. Nat and Selena aren’t little kids anymore. They might do something impulsive.
“They might even hurt themselves trying to find their biological father. Eyentually, they will know the truth. Instead of making them bleed and cry and pay the price, you might as well just tell them directly.”
