Chapter 213
“What are you doing here? Lacey was stunned. A mixture of excitement, embarrassment, and insecurity all hit her at once. The moment Joseph stepped inside, his gaze swept across the room.
Her underwear and socks were scattered across the couch and coffee table. She rarely cleaned up since she lived alone and barely had visitors. Joseph had shown up without warning and walked right in, leaving her with no time to tidy up.
“I don’t feel like going home tonight, and I don’t want anyone to find me. Let me crash here for the night.” Joseph walked over, brushed the clothes off the couch, and sat down. From the brands and quality alone, he could tell that Lacey’s tastes left much to be desired. That, or she simply wasn’t well off.
“You’re staying here? What am I supposed to tell Ms. Lowell?” Lacey hurriedly gathered up the clothes and held them against her chest.
Joseph shook her head. “Don’t tell her, or anyone else for that matter. I didn’t tell a single person I was coming here either. If it’s inconvenient for you, I’ll just leave.”
Lacey replied, “It’s not. Just let me tidy up my room a little first.”
Joseph said, “Do whatever you want. I’m just going to sleep on the couch. Don’t wake me up unless the world is literally ending.”
Since Lacey agreed, Joseph took off his shoes and lay down fully clothed. Within moments, he was asleep.
“Doesn’t he need some time to adjust?” Lacey said softly, feeling a little caught off guard. But from Joseph’s light snoring, and judging by how relaxed his body was, he had fallen asleep almost instantly.
Lacey quietly gathered up the scattered clothes and stayed nearby. Watching Joseph sleep so soundly as if he were at home, Lacey found herself wondering whether he missed his own house or children at all.
It looked like he really did want a divorce.
Lacey lowered the volume on her phone and put on earphones. However, her usual dramas and novels suddenly seemed boring. Her attention kept drifting back to the man sleeping on her couch. Worried he might catch a cold, she fetched a blanket and covered him.
