A Man with Nerves of Steel (Joseph Hart) novel Chapter 215

Chapter 215

Wendy went to see Frank and called out to him repeatedly, but he gave her no response. Once again, she left empty-handed. The moment she was gone, Joseph had Paige keep watch again while he questioned Frank, extracting a few choice secrets known only to Frank and Warren.

As it turned out, Frank had helped Warren build an exotic animal breeding facility deep in the wilderness along Jenton’s border. The compound housed numerous rare and protected species.

After weighing his options, Joseph tipped off a police officer whose family he had previously treated.

With that taken care of, Joseph went to have a meal with Dolly. A few of his patients’ families joined them, and once the meal wrapped up, he moved straight into his private consultations.

However, his routine was interrupted when a massive multi-car accident occurred on the highway, critically injuring a young woman who happened to be the relative of a high-ranking official. She was rushed to Jenton University Hospital, and the staff requested Joseph personally handle the case.

Joseph hurried back immediately. The patient had gone into cardiac arrest once in the ambulance and a second time shortly after arrival. Though she was successfully revived both times, the repeated defibrillator shocks had left dark, angry bruises across her chest.

There were no penetrating wounds, but her cervical spine had sustained severe trauma. Worse, the frantic, emergency CPR performed at the scene had caused secondary injuries, including two fractured ribs.

Following a tense emergency consultation, the trauma team established a surgical plan. With Joseph serving as lead surgeon, the operation stretched on for hours.

Ultimately, he saved her life and successfully stabilized her spine, making paralysis highly unlikely. Once she cleared the critical post-op window, Joseph was reasonably confident she would make a full recovery. Only then did he finally breathe a sigh of relief.

By then, it was already 10:00 pm. Joseph wanted nothing more than to crash in his office, but he knew his colleagues were watching. A married man who refused to go home would inevitably become the subject of hospital gossip.

Just as he was preparing to leave, the police officer he had tipped off earlier arrived in person to invite him out for a late-night meal. Thanks to Joseph’s information, the department had successfully dismantled a major wildlife trafficking ring. It was a high-profile bust, and the precinct was taking massive credit for it.

The officer refused to take no for an answer, personally driving Joseph to the restaurant. Unfortunately, the entire exchange was entirely too visible. The moment Joseph walked out of the restaurant, he spotted Cora waiting in her car outside.
