“How important do you think you are?” Joseph’scoffed inwardly.

Turning away from Cora’s car, he walked across to the opposite lane and flagged down an oncoming cab.

By sheer coincidence, the driver turned out to be the owner of the breakfast diner.

Smiling, the man asked, “Dr. Hart, what are you doing out here? Where’s your car?”

“I was just having dinner nearby,” Joseph replied calmly, sliding into the backseat. “But an emergency came up. I need to head back to the hospital.”

He kept his expression neutral, riding the rest of the way in silence.

Along the way, the driver took a call from his family. The deep concern in his wife’s voice and the cheerful chatter of his children practically spilled through the phone’s receiver. The warm, harmonious atmosphere filled Joseph with envy.

Ordinary people had to struggle just to make ends meet, he thought, but at least their relationships weren’t suffocated by status, money, and ulterior motives. They were probably happier for it. They worked hard to build a life, but at least what they had was real. 1

He was just an ordinary man. Marrying up into Cora’s world had been asking for trouble from day one, creating a gap that could never truly be bridged. After all these years of exhausting effort, he was still less happy than the average guy on the street.

After a brief stop at the hospital, Joseph quietly made his way to Lacey’s apartment again.

“Why don’t you sleep on the bed?” Lacey asked, surprised to see him show up so late. “It’s wider and a lot more comfortable than the couch.”

“Sure. I’ll take the bed, and you can have the couch.” Joseph didn’t stand on ceremony. He walked straight into the bedroom, stripped down, and crashed. He was asleep almost the moment his head hit the pillow.

Lacey was speechless. “This guy sure doesn’t hold back.”
