“What happened to Warren?” Joseph asked Paige the moment he returned to the hospital.

“Word is he fell in one of the stairwells in the inpatient wing. He tumbled down a flight and cracked his head against the wall. That knocked him out cold on the spot. Paige relayed the information she had managed to gather.

Joseph immediately had a clear picture of what had actually gone down. Someone had almost certainly lured Warren into that blind spot and given him a hard shove.

After reviewing Warren’s charts and doing a quick walk-by of his room, Joseph could practically visualize the assault. If Warren hadn’t completely lost consciousness from the initial tumble, his attacker had likely followed him down the steps to deliver a final, crushing blow against the concrete.

Of course, the hospital administration would never admit to that. They would insist that Warren fell down the stairs himself. If they acknowledged an assault, it would be a public relations nightmare-one major incident right after another, stretching from the drama with Walt and Yvette to Warren’s assault. The state board would inevitably launch an investigation, and every department head would be under the microscope.

Warren would have to stay unconscious for a while. As for exactly when the man would wake up, that would depend entirely on how Joseph played his cards. He had his own plans and no intention of letting Warren off easily.

When the multidisciplinary consultation meeting began, Joseph finally met Jennifer Sanders, Warren’s wife. She was an undeniably striking woman with a soft, round face and a tall, exceptionally voluptuous figure.
