So in the end, all Jennifer wanted was moricy. It seemed that the most practical, unbreakable bond between a husband and wife in high society was built on a ledger after all. Love was entirely optional, but cash was non-negotiable.

Joseph was filled with disdain for Jennifer, but he said nothing more.

Not long after Jennifer left, a wave of Warren’s other family members arrived, including his brothers and various distant relatives. They barraged Joseph with the exact same questions about why Warren hadn’t woken up and when he might regain consciousness. Joseph merely repeated the same medical script he had given before.

Warren’s eldest brother suggested transferring him to another hospital, and Joseph readily agreed. However, Jennifer immediately shut it down, flatly insisting that Warren remain right here at Jenton University Hospital.

Later that evening, a knock sounded at his office door, and a beautiful woman stepped inside. She asked about Warren’s condition. When Joseph initially tried to turn her away, she confessed to being Warren’s mistress.

Joseph didn’t believe her and asked for proof. So, the woman produced photographs of herself and Warren celebrating a child’s birthday together and said the child was Warren’s son, Charles.

Joseph gave her a once-over again. She carried herself with quiet elegance. If she weren’t Warren’s mistress, she could very well have worked in education or a similar profession. Joseph pulled up Warren’s medical file and basically recited everything word for word.

When he was done, the woman made no move to leave, so he asked, “Do you have any other questions?”

The woman hesitated for a moment before saying, “I need to get hold of his phone. There’s a very important message on it.”

Joseph shrugged. “It’s not with me.”
