Once the treatment was over, Joseph got ready to leave. It was Grace who walked him out.

“I decided not to keep it a secret from Mavis, yet she didn’t hold it against me. She actually gave me her support.

“You know her better than I do. What do you think she meant by that?”

“She said she’d support us. That’s exactly what she meant.” Grace’s cheeks went red.

Mavis had actually openly expressed her support for Grace and Joseph to be together. That meant they could be in a relationship. She could even tell her entire family that she was Joseph’s girlfriend.

“Oh? Isn’t she just worried that I won’t do my best to treat her? That’s why she asked you to be with me. Isn’t this just some kind of transaction?”

“Well, what do you think? Is it just a transaction?” Grace looked at Joseph earnestly. She wanted to know what was on his mind.

“I don’t think it’s entirely a transaction, but you can’t say it isn’t one. To all of you, my medical skills are my only real value.

“Some pretend to be in love with me, others use money and power, and some even threaten my life. There may be other ways too, but I can see through them all. Grace, you say you love me, but how much of it is actually real?”

“None. It’s all fake. All I want is to sleep with you. I just want sex, that’s all. Is that the answer you’re looking for?”

Grace looked at Joseph, resentment in her eyes. She rolled her eyes at him as he drove off. Once his car disappeared, disappointment washed all over her, and she regretted everything she had said.

Cora already hurt Joseph badly. Hadn’t Grace been acting like her earlier?

“Forget it. He’ll understand soon enough! Why should I even say anything more?”

Grace went inside the house and saw Mavis sitting upright. Her expression stiffened for a moment.

Finally, she walked over to Mavis and sat next to her, but she didn’t know what to say.
