“Joe, what did you do to Yasmin last night? She was literally just in tears, saying you did something to her,” Cora said to Joseph over the phone on her ride back.

“I didn’t do anything. If I had, she would’ve called the cops on me by now. And even if she wouldn’t, she would’ve had her people take me out,” Joseph replied from the other end of the line.

“You must have done something to her. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have said that.”

“Then what do you think I did? Or rather, what are you hoping I did?”

“I-I just hope you didn’t do anything.”

“Then I didn’t! Don’t you trust me anymore? If you don’t, then why are you even talking to me? Jeez.”

“Don’t hang up-”

But she was too late. The call had already been disconnected.

All of a sudden, the driver yelled, “Oh crap! Brace yourself!”

Before Cora could understand what was happening, the car jolted violently as another vehicle T-boned them from the side.

They were on a bridge. If their car got pushed over the edge into the river, they would be as good as dead.

The driver skillfully maneuvered the vehicle and managed to shake off the attacking car. Since they were in an armored vehicle, the impact itself wasn’t an issue. But it was still a terrifying ride.

The whiplash from the inertia left Cora’s neck throbbing in pain.

The escort vehicles behind them quickly moved in to protect them and escorted them off the bridge. Shortly afterward, Cora received a report.

The attacker had jumped into the river, where an accomplice in a speedboat was waiting to take them downstream. Her men were unable to give chase in the end.

All they could confirm was that the driver was a woman and the car had fake plates. Getting more intel was going to take time and a thorough investigation.

Left with little choice, Cora headed to the hospital to have Joseph take a look at her.

The scans Joseph ordered for Cora revealed no major problems. Still, because Belinda had already told him that the operation would begin that night, he advised Cora to remain hospitalized for observation despite her light injuries.

After Cora agreed to stay in the hospital, she turned to Joseph. “Why don’t you seem surprised or concerned about my car being hit? You used to freak out and be so worried whenever I had so much as a minor illness.”

“With the way things are for you guys now, isn’t something like this just par for the course? Why would I be surprised? And do I even have the right to care about you? Or better yet, do you still deserve my concern?” Joseph

shot back.

“Why won’t you believe me?”

“Why should I?”

Hearing that, Cora fell silent. She could clearly sense that something had changed in Joseph. Could Yasmin really be right? Was she the reason Joseph had changed so much?

It had been a while since he first confronted her with those DNA test results, and so much had happened to and around him since then. Enough gradual changes could eventually lead to a complete transformation.

“I’m just an ordinary doctor, someone insignificant. Outside this hospital, I’m nothing. There’s nothing I can do – to help you with your mess, so you’re on your own.”

Seeing Fiona and the others arrive to look after Cora, Joseph turned to leave. He completely ignored Fiona’s greeting, acting like she wasn’t even there.
