In another ward, Grace was taking care of Yasmin. Since they were still considered sisters-in-law and were so far from home, Grace was the only one who could do it.

Yasmin had actually woken up once already, but seeing she was in a hospital room with Grace hovering over her, she just closed her eyes and went back to sleep.

When she woke up again, Joseph was sitting by her bed pulling out acupuncture needles. He had used acupuncture to wake her up.

“You’re not in serious condition. You can be discharged and recover at home, though you may also stay here for another day or two for observation.

“Personally, I suggest you get discharged and go back to your home in Croma.”

He went on, “Jenton isn’t a safe place to be. I really don’t want to see you sticking around here.”

Without even looking at Joseph, Yasmin turned to Grace. “Book our flights. You’re coming back with me.”

As soon as Grace caught Joseph’s nod of approval, she went to handle the discharge paperwork, leaving the two of them alone to talk.

Joseph remarked, “The biggest mistake you and your husband made was letting your greed bring you out here to Jenton to be the tip of the spear. You thought this was just some backwater town filled with easy targets.

“All of your families ganging up on the Ashmores is nothing but the big guys bullying the little guy. But have you ever stopped to think about who’s really in control of Jenton?”

Yasmin stayed silent.

Joseph continued, “When you go back this time, don’t make the same foolish mistake again. Treasure what you already have in Croma. It’s more than enough to guarantee you a life of wealth and privilege.

“Being in Jenton now is a risk in itself. The real chaos here hasn’t even started yet. Once it does, no one knows how many people will be dragged into it or how many lives will be lost.”

“Are you the one who’s going to set it all in motion?” Yasmin asked.

“That’s not something you need to concern yourself with. Just watch from the sidelines. As long as you don’t step into the ring, you’ll be fine.”

Joseph said no more. When the nurse brought over the discharge papers, he signed them and sent Yasmin on her

way.

Yasmin and Grace headed back to their places, grabbed their bags, and went straight to the airport.

Right before boarding, Cora showed up. She shooed Grace away before turning to Yasmin. “Can you tell me how you ended up in Joe’s hands last night? And what did he do to you after he took you to the hospital?”

Yasmin was wearing sunglasses. If she weren’t, Cora would have seen the mix of anger, fear, and other complicated emotions in her eyes.

She never wanted to think about last night again for as long as she lived.

Yasmin shot back, “Have you seriously not figured it out by now? The second I set up that dinner, I was already playing right into his hands.

“You backed him into a corner until he turned into a monster! Watch your back, Cora. Either grow a spine and take him out right now, or just wait for the day he turns on you.”
