Chapter 281
Sure enough, Mason wasted no time asking Joseph to walk them through Frank’s entire treatment plan from the very beginning, in as much detail as possible. Theodore sat beside him, ready to scrutinize and verify every single
step.
Joseph pulled the patient file from the cabinet. Just as he was about to begin, his phone vibrated with a message from Cora. “Joe, someone just sent me a message telling me to watch my back around you. They said you never intended to cure them. Tell me honestly, did you ever plan on curing Frank?”
Joseph replied immediately. “Who sent it?”
Cora typed back. “Emma.”
Joseph scoffed. “That’s just a baseless accusation.”
He then let out a quiet sigh. He didn’t know exactly what had gone wrong, but something had clearly been exposed. Fortunately, it couldn’t be anything too damning. If Emma had real proof, she would have gone straight to the police instead of sending cryptic warnings to Cora.
After weighing his options, Joseph calmly began reviewing Frank’s treatment. Everything he explained was exactly what had already been discussed during their previous meetings. It was routine and conventional, with nothing out of the ordinary.
Whenever Theodore questioned a detail, Joseph either answered directly or said that he didn’t know. He didn’t try to argue with Theodore.
When Theodore was done with his questions, Joseph asked, “Is it the Zahns again?”
Mason replied, “There are suspicions, but we’re not sure if it’s the Zahns.”
Joseph raised an eyebrow. “You’re not even sure who’s behind it?”
“It’s Emma,” Mason explained. “So far, no one from the Zahns has openly backed her, so we can’t verify a connection. Dr. Hart, please understand that in medicine, the truth only becomes clearer through discussion.”
Joseph nodded. “Of course. But medicine also relies entirely on mutual trust. If a patient’s family trusts me, I’ll do everything in my power to save them. But if that trust is broken, there’s no point in me continuing as the attending physician. I have no intention of becoming a convenient scapegoat.”
He wasn’t just making a point; he was protecting himself. At this stage, he trusted no one-not even himself. The only things he could rely on were his medical knowledge and his ability to weaponize it.
Theodore replied, “Even if you step down as his attending physician, we’ll still require regular consultations with you.”
Joseph nodded. “I see. If that’s the case, these records are yours.”
He handed Frank’s file directly to Theodore.
Mason coughed, silently blaming Theodore for revealing their intentions too early. He said to Joseph, “Dr. Hart, you’re still an incredibly valuable asset to this hospital.”
Joseph said politely, “I understand. I’ll continue to fulfill my duties.”
After Mason left, Joseph called Paige in. They completed the formal handover with Theodore. Joseph also took the opportunity to recommend transferring Frank.

After all, Theodore was the associate director of the Traditional Medicine Center and needed to work there.
Joseph fully cooperated with the transfer procedures. The whole time, Emma didn’t say a single word. She merely shot Joseph an icy glare filled with unmistakable, burning hatred. For a fleeting moment, Joseph felt a prickle of regret he shouldn’t have fought so hard to save her family when they were poisoned.
The thought vanished as quickly as it had come. No matter what, he was a doctor. When a critically ill patient was – coding in front of him, his instincts would always drive him to save a life first.
Back in his office, he called Cora. “Frank has been transferred to the Traditional Medicine Center. If you want to get answers out of him, you’ll have to go there.”
