Joseph could afford to act that way because he knew that as long as Belinda didn’t betray him, no one could prove a thing. And without proof, he was completely untouchable.

Before they left, the middle-aged Zahn family member, Wallace Zahn, shot Joseph a glare filled with murderous intent.

Mason watched Joseph thoughtfully before he smiled. “Dr. Hart, you seem to have something against the Zahns. Why is that?”

Joseph wondered if he really made it that obvious.

He simply replied, “They’re insulting my skills and my ethics as a doctor. Respect is a two-way street-if they won’t give it, they won’t get it. I don’t owe them anything, and I certainly don’t depend on them, so I see no reason to grovel before them.”

Mason replied, “They’re certainly in the wrong for throwing around accusations based on nothing but suspicion. But the reality is, they have the power to back up their arrogance.

“Dr. Hart, I need you to bear with it for now. Sometimes, if you take a step back, you open the door to much bigger opportunities.”

“I understand,” Joseph replied evenly. “I’ll keep my head down when I have to. I’m not looking for trouble. By the way, have you heard anything else about this situation? Don’t keep anything from me. Right now, I’m practically flying blind. I have no idea what’s coming next.”

He wasn’t confronting Mason. He genuinely just wanted information.

Mason lowered his voice. “I have an acquaintance at Mercy Hospital. He’s part of the Zahn family’s medical team, and also part of our local community. The Zahns suspect you because of Jenna. That old man just now was Jenna’s senior, Victor Zahn.”

Joseph frowned. “So it was Jenna again? They couldn’t save Barry, so now they’re trying to pin the blame on me. How despicable. I barely had any contact with Barry, so why would she report me? What exactly happened when Barry suddenly fell ill?”

Inside, whatever favorable impression Joseph once held of Jenna had completely disappeared.

He even found himself regretting his earlier restraint. Maybe he should have been more ruthless and made her dysentery much worse. If he pushed it a little further, he could even have put her life in danger.

At the time, however, Joseph hadn’t understood the situation enough to dare take such an extreme risk.

Mason shook his head. “The Zahn family only announced that Barry was dead. They haven’t disclosed the cause of death. They also required every doctor and nurse present to sign confidentiality agreements.

“What I did hear is that Barry was perfectly healthy yesterday and the day before, and was even enjoying himself outside. Then, he suddenly dropped dead today.

“It’s obvious that something unusual has happened. The Zahns couldn’t accept that it was a natural death, so they expanded the scope of investigation. As far as you and the hospital are concerned, this was just a routine inquiry.”

Joseph nodded. “I see. Well, our treatment plan will withstand any scrutiny. I just can’t stand the way they treat people.”

He didn’t argue any further. A critically ill patient in the ICU required immediate attention, so he returned to work.
