If Cora had been honest from the start and agreed to an amicable divorce, Joseph would have been fine with not receiving any compensation. They could go their own separate ways and live their own lives in peace. 

But Cora refused to admit anything and even tried to deny the truth. That left him with no choice but to rebel. He had to resort to another way to end the marriage.
