A Man with Nerves of Steel (Joseph Hart) novel Chapter 325

Chapter 325

Joseph refused to go back to Cora’s house, and his guard went up after the call ended. He knew that Cora wasn’t just trying to scare him. Someone really was out to get him.

But he wasn’t in this alone anymore. He had Kenneth under his thumb now, and Kenneth had placed his men at Joseph’s disposal.

There weren’t many of them, but Joseph could still make good use of them. He wasn’t a lone wolf anymore. He didn’t have to fight a one-man war.

The very next day, the special task force touched down in Jenton. The head of the team, Patricia Shaffer, was a middle-aged woman three years older than Joseph. She seemed highly capable. Though her looks were plain, her eyes reflected a sharp mind.

The rest of the team consisted of three women and five men.

Patricia and her aide came to see Joseph. Before saying a word, they swept his office for listening devices. Only when they were sure the room was clean did they get down to business.

Patricia asked, “You said the patient’s blood showed signs of a hereditary disease. What exactly is this disease? If we want to pursue this angle, what advice would you give us?”

Joseph answered, “I put that out on purpose as bait. Anyone with a guilty conscience is going to react to it.

“The goal is to make them panic and start making careless mistakes. The Jenton police are already running with that angle, so we should be getting some feedback pretty soon.”

Patricia was taken aback, but she quickly understood what Joseph had been trying to do. As she stared at him, she couldn’t help thinking that this doctor was anything but ordinary.

She also approved of his approach. After all, all was fair in love and war.

She asked a few more technical medical questions, careful not to put too much pressure on Joseph, before leaving to coordinate the investigation.

As soon as Joseph was done with an emergency case, he learned that Jenna was waiting for him in his office, so he headed back.

He had Paige offer her some water, but Jenna didn’t touch it. He asked, “What, afraid I’ll poison you?”

“As if you haven’t thought about it.”

Jenna was naturally on high alert around him. The last time she’d passed out before spending the night puking and running to the bathroom wasn’t enough to threaten her life, but it had been miserable enough.

“Then why walk right into my line of fire? Are you brave or just stupid?”

“I just have a question to ask you…”

“If it’s about my personal life, I have nothing to say. If it’s about work, you’re the expert, not me. I’m far too inexperienced to answer any of your questions. Now, please leave the same way you came in.”

Joseph gestured to the door. When she didn’t budge, he called security to escort her out.

“Joseph, people’s lives are at stake here. Don’t be so childish…”

No matter what Jenna said, Joseph tuned her out. He was just a regular doctor. He neither could nor needed to take

responsibility for every single life.

Her talk about lives being at stake was just a way of emotionally blackmailing him anyway.

Besides, the lives she was talking about belonged to the Zahn family or maybe the Towne family.

Joseph knew Cora and Jonas were very close. Even though he didn’t have proof that they were sleeping together, his gut told him there was definitely something going on between them.
