A Man with Nerves of Steel (Joseph Hart) novel Chapter 328

Chapter 328

Joseph believed he’d given Cora every opportunity to make things right, but she’d let them all slip away. That meant that she’d never taken him seriously.

Or maybe she’d never respected their marriage from day one. She just assumed she held the upper hand in the relationship, that Joseph should revolve around her, and that her word was law.

For years, Joseph had loved her so deeply that he would have given her the world. He never imagined that three DNA tests would expose his whole relationship as one big lie.

He loved her, but she never loved him. That broke his heart and filled him with resentment. Since Cora had trampled on his dignity time and again, she was going to pay the price.

After keeping busy at the hospital for a while, Joseph received a call from Dolly. She’d gotten her hands on a bottle of fine wine and invited him over to her place for a drink. He wrapped up his work and headed out.

On the way, he made sure to shake off the people tailing him, whether they were Cora’s men or the members of the special task force, before slipping into Dolly’s place.

Inside, Dolly had personally cooked steak and brought out the wine she mentioned. It had been a gift from the family of a patient at the sanatorium, specially brought back from another country.

Belinda couldn’t drink, but she could still enjoy the steak and beverages, so she joined them.

Over dinner, Belinda listened as the two of them talked about the exchange transfusion. She chimed in, asking Joseph, “From what you’re saying, are you suggesting that Mr. Zahn Senior only lived this long because of blood transfusions?”

Joseph kept eating, not in any hurry to respond.

Dolly said, “There’s no question about it. It has to be true! I heard Mr. Zahn Senior still has all his teeth and can walk on his own. Not only that, he is still as sharp as ever and speaks with perfect clarity.

“For a guy his age, he’s suspiciously healthy. He has to be using some insane anti-aging method. Your family is close to the Zahn family. Haven’t you ever heard anything about it?”

“No. Not at all! Everything I know about the Zahn family comes from Barry, and I only know what he chooses to tell me. A secret as sensitive as Mr. Zahn Senior’s longevity would never be shared with me.”

Belinda stared at Joseph, feeling even more shocked. For years, nobody had been able to figure out Owen’s secret to a long life, yet Joseph had stumbled upon it by sheer chance.

Joseph swallowed his food and said, “It’s not really some groundbreaking new concept. There have been news reports about it overseas for a while.

“It just hadn’t happened around us before, so people hadn’t paid much attention to it. What we should be worried about is the fact that any one of our kids could end up on the chopping block as a blood source for exchange

transfusions.”

He took a sip of wine. “Maurice has been perfectly healthy for years. I suspect he’s using similar shady methods. You should keep an eye on any sudden illnesses in the younger generation of the Towne family, especially Maurice’s illegitimate children.”

Belinda went quiet.

Dolly said, “If there are any illegitimate children, their existence would almost certainly be kept a secret. Belinda

might not even know they exist.”

Belinda nodded in agreement. “Now that you mention it, I really haven’t heard of any illegitimate children. He always has young caregivers around him, and they’re replaced regularly.
