Joseph hadn’t expected Cora to come looking for him at the office again.

She looked exhausted. It was obvious she hadn’t been sleeping well, but he felt nothing for her anymore. Her betrayal had cured him of any lingering warmth.

Even so, he poured her a cup of fresh coffee and slid it across the desk.

He asked coolly, “Why aren’t you visiting your dear partner at the Traditional Medicine Center? His prostate is as good as gone. He entered the hospital with all his parts intact, but he’ll be leaving it one piece short.”

Cora frowned. “I don’t have the kind of relationship with Jonas that you keep imagining.”

But her discomfort wasn’t just due to Joseph’s mocking attitude; it was also because of Jonas’ grim prognosis. She had originally intended to persuade Joseph to visit the Traditional Medicine Center. With Joseph’s medical skills he would almost certainly be able to pull Jonas back from death’s door.

But given Joseph’s deep suspicions, there was no way he would agree to treat Jonas. Besides, Jonas was the primary reason Joseph had been ousted from Jenton University Hospital in the first place. Josep had zero reason to save him.

Joseph merely let out a cold laugh, entirely uninterested in arguing. Once upon a time, he’d desperately wanted concrete proof of Cora’s infidelity-something undeniable that would force her to give up the charade, or perhaps just force him to finally let go.

But everything that had happened recently had changed his perspective. He already had all the proof he needed. If Cora refused to admit it, then she would simply have to bear the consequences.

One by one, every man connected to her would be destroyed. Frank, Warren, and now Jonas had been ruined. All that remained was the actual father of Natalie and the girls-whether that was one man or several.

He would destroy them all, and he didn’t care if they ever understood why.

After taking a slow sip of his coffee, he said, “Jenton is a big city. Millions of people live here. But at the same time, it’s incredibly small. There are very few people whose lives actually intersect with ours, who move in the exact same circles.”

Cora’s frown deepened as she said, “You’ve changed. You’re not the man you used to be.”

“People are changed by what happens to them, and I’m no exception. After what I’ve been through, no one could come out the same. I’m just an ordinary man. A nobody. I’ve never been one in control of my own fate.”

He looked Cora directly in the eye. “You come from the prestigious Lowell family. Over the years, you’ve built yourself up to be the wealthiest person in Jenton. Your reputation and status are sky-high. From the very beginning, there was a gap between us. And now, it’s wider than it has ever been.

“It’s as if you’re walking in the clouds, while I’m just down here on the pavement. We aren’t walking the same path anymore.”

Cora shook her head. “I don’t care about any of that! All I know is that you’re my husband. You’re my man. We are husband and wife!”

Joseph ignored the outburst, quietly taking another sip of his coffee. “But right now, you and the Lowells are facing a catastrophe. I may very well get to watch your empire rise, only to watch it completely collapse. The Lowells are about to follow the exact path as the Ashmores and lose everything.”
