A Man with Nerves of Steel (Joseph Hart) novel Chapter 357

Chapter 357

“You’re using him for a bet? What did you do with Jonas?” Jenna demanded immediately.

Joseph replied evenly, “I didn’t do anything to him. I’m just betting that you won’t be able to cure him because, frankly, I don’t think your skills are up to par.”

Jenna bristled at the insult. “Don’t you dare underestimate me!”

Deep down, however, she knew Joseph’s medical expertise surpassed her own. Even if she told herself it was only by a razor-thin margin, the realization left her rebuttal lacking any real conviction.

“We’ll see,” Joseph said. Without another word, he ignored her entirely and focused on enjoying his meal.

He finished quickly, thanked her for the lunch, and stood up to leave the hotel.

Jenna hurried after him. “Did you really come all the way here just to have a meal? What’s your actual angle?”

Joseph smiled. “Not everyone is as conniving as you. I don’t go around hurting people, and I certainly don’t resort to dirty tricks just to steal another family’s medical knowledge.”

Jenna ignored the jab. After all, she hadn’t been the one who forced those wagers on the Gould family or the other local practitioners; she had merely reaped the benefits of her family’s action.

Still, a persistent sense of unease settled in her gut. Joseph never joked about a patient’s condition, and he wouldn’t have brought up Jonas’ prognosis without a reason.

Anxious, she hurried back to the Traditional Medicine Center to personally examine Jonas. When she checked his vitals and charts, everything appeared perfectly stable.

She thoroughly questioned the nurses and the attending physician on duty. No strangers had been anywhere near Jonas’ room. Only then did she finally breathe a sigh of relief.

She’d just returned to her office and poured herself a glass of water when the emergency alarm from Jonas’ room shattered the quiet.

Jenna rushed over and found that Jonas’ surgical wound had become severely infected. His temperature was climbing dangerously high.

“Joseph jinxed it!” Jenna cursed under her breath.

A sense of dread washed over her. She immediately reviewed every step of Jonas’ treatment and medication, ordered a fresh round of emergency lab work, and instructed the nurses to administer fever-reducing drugs.

After a frantic round of emergency intervention, Jenna’s expression grew increasingly grim. She couldn’t stop his condition from rapidly deteriorating.

She called an emergency consultation with several colleagues, but no one could offer a better solution. The moment she stepped out of the consultation room, she found Belinda waiting for her in the hallway.

Jenna stopped short, surprised. “What are you doing here?”

She knew Joseph had saved Belinda’s life in the past, meaning Belinda was firmly in Joseph’s camp. It suddenly made sense how Joseph had anticipated Jonas’ downward spiral.

“I’m just here for an update on Jonas’ treatment,” Belinda said. “I want to know exactly how confident you are that you can save him. Because if you can’t, I’m transferring him to another hospital immediately.”

“Did Joseph put you up to this?” Jenna shot back. “Do you want to move Jonas to Joseph’s care?”

Belinda sneered. “That has nothing to do with you. The Traditional Medicine Center couldn’t save my grandfather, so I have every right to wonder if you’re going to kill Jonas too. Jenna, your reputation as Jenton’s Miracle Doctor is an absolute joke.”

“You’ve got a death wish, don’t you?” Jenna exploded. There was no way she could tolerate being called a fraud.

Belinda scoffed. “Are you threatening me? What gives a mere doctor like you the right to threaten me?”

Without warning, Belinda slapped Jenna hard across the face. Then, she pointed at Jenna. “So many people have called you Jenton’s Miracle Doctor that you’ve actually started to believe it. Yet, you couldn’t even save my grandfather. If you ask me, you’re nothing but a quack!”

Jenna froze, having never expected to be slapped in public. After recovering from the shock, she raised her hand to strike back. But Belinda’s bodyguards and the surrounding hospital staff instantly surged forward to separate

them.
