Helen started to get impatient. “Joseph, I’m talking about your career. Stop bringing up the children. Your future is what’s important.”

Joseph merely continued, “The Zahn family is in serious trouble now. Are you stopping Cora from telling you because you want to protect your son-in-law from the Zahn family? Or do you already know and are keeping it from me? Are you helping Cora cover up her shame?”

The two of them spoke past each other, each answering questions the other hadn’t asked. Gradually, Joseph gained the upper hand, and Helen was forced to give up.

Helen sighed. “You’re too stubborn for me to argue with you. But everything I’ve said has been for your own good.

“Thank you for your concern. I’m on the verge of divorcing Cora, yet you’re still looking out for me. I’m very touched.” Joseph sighed. “I suppose treating you as my mother for almost 20 years wasn’t completely meaningless. But if you’re helping Cora hide the truth, then you’ll still have to bear the consequences someday.”

Joseph still believed that Helen knew at least part of the truth and was simply refusing to tell him.

“Are you cursing me right now?” Helen’s expression darkened.

Joseph shrugged. “I’m simply speaking the truth. Ultimately, everyone must bear the consequences of their own actions. No one else can shield you from them.”

Helen shook her head. “Enough with that. You should stop reading those scriptures as well; you’re going to drive yourself insane. If you’re determined to keep this clinic, I won’t force you to close it. But I have a patient that you have to save.”

Joseph asked, “Jeffrey Towne?”

Helen nodded. “So you know of him. Good. Then I won’t have to explain things. I’ll have someone bring him over later.”

Joseph raised an eyebrow. “Who is he? Cora’s lover?”

Helen frowned. “Stop being so suspicious. Jeffrey is the liaison for a joint project between the Lowell and Towne families. If he doesn’t recover, the entire project will collapse.”

Joseph smirked. “I wouldn’t dare to take on such an important patient. Don’t send him here. It was the Towne family that got me driven out of Jenton University Hospital. How could you expect me to save someone from that family? What’s even going through your mind?”

Joseph chuckled. “Were you always this cruel, or did your heart simply grow more evil with age?”

Helen glared at him in anger. “You’ve got some nerve. How dare you talk to me like that?”

Joseph didn’t so much as blink. He simply remained there, utterly unconcerned.

Only then did Helen realize that Joseph was no longer the same person. The circumstances had changed entirely. The Lowell family was in trouble, and even Cora could no longer keep Joseph under her control.

Realizing she had nothing left to say, Helen turned to leave.

Joseph then said, “If I treated you with more respect, would you let me divorce Cora? Would you treat me with the same respect? No. You’d keep treating me exactly as you always have. You’d exploit me and make me work for you

Helen stood there in silence, and Joseph continued, “Go back and tell Cora something for me. If she keeps stalling with the divorce, it’ll only make things worse.”

Helen turned around. “Joseph, if you want a divorce, you shouldn’t choose a time like this. This is when Cora needs you most.”

Joseph scoffed. “It’s because of the situation now that Cora will finally understand. The situation is no longer under her control, and she’s no longer untouchable. The gap between us is getting smaller. So she should let go.
