After she left, Joseph found himself replaying those words over and over. They stung, but they were also painfully realistic.

Without the title of the Lowell family’s son-in-law, he was simply a doctor whose medical skills happened to be a little better than everyone else’s. His parents were long gone, and they hadn’t left him a fortune that would spare him the need to struggle. 1

His savings weren’t substantial either.

Cora had changed, and the children weren’t his. In the end, he truly stood alone.

He shook off those lingering emotions and called Peyton. He asked her to step it up and target another Evercrest Industrial warehouse.

At noon, Joseph spent another hour poring over local magazines. He carefully studied Emerald Mountain’s terrain and waterways before finally circling a location on the map. Then, he called Kenneth over and gave him a few instructions.

Hidden deep within the mountains lay a sizable reservoir. Joseph suspected it to be Owen’s private fish pond.

Kenneth wasted no time carrying out the order.

His men quietly infiltrated a nearby mountain overlooking the Zahn family’s territory. After setting up a simple launch platform, they waited until darkness fell. Then a drone silently took off, dropping poison into the reservoir.

That night, Joseph remained at the clinic. It had effectively become Peyton’s field hospital.

Peyton and the Croma faction launched another assault against the Zahn family. Whenever possible, they settled matters according to the underworld’s own rules. Fights were breaking out everywhere, but fortunately, no one was killed.

The following morning, Kenneth reported back-every living thing in the reservoir was dead. From large fish weighing dozens of pounds down to tiny shrimp and tortoises, everything had been wiped out.

Joseph had no clue that the pond was also home to an ancient tortoise that had lived for over a century. It had been Owen’s childhood pet. After drinking the poisoned water and feeding on the contaminated fish, it died.

Another Evercrest Industrial warehouse was also burned to the ground.

With mounting losses on every front, the Zahn family finally gave in. They were forced to sit down and negotiate with the outsiders.

A temporary ceasefire was declared, and the talks quickly shifted toward dividing the spoils. As the victors, the outsiders demanded not only the Zahn family’s so-called longevity method but also a share of Jenton’s economic interests.

By evening, a photocopied medical manuscript lay on Joseph’s desk. It was the longevity manual that the Zahn family had been forced to surrender. Mavis had made sure to send Joseph a copy so he could determine whether it was genuine.
