Peyton shrugged. “Who knows?”

Cora studied her expression carefully as she spoke. After a moment, Cora concluded that Peyton genuinely didn’t know where Joseph was, so she left.

Still, Peyton’s offhand remark about Joseph having other women reminded her of something. She had once arranged for two women to be around Joseph-Lacey and the other hostess.

The hostess was working, so Joseph was unlikely to be with her. Lacey, however, didn’t have any assignments at

the moment.

Without calling ahead, Cora drove straight to Lacey’s apartment.

She unlocked the door and walked inside. She didn’t see Lacey, but she heard Lacey say something that made her deeply unhappy.

“Joseph, you’re here!”

The moment she heard that, she knew that Joseph had been here before.

When Lacey stepped out and saw Cora, she froze in place, dumbfounded.

Realizing she’d just let the truth slip, she hurriedly apologized, “Ms. Lowell, Joseph came here twice. He threatened me and wouldn’t let me tell you. He said that if I told you, he’d kill both Yvonne and me.”

“Twice?” Cora felt a deep sense of betrayal. Yet, she didn’t explode. She merely stared at Lacey with an icy gaze.

Lacey nodded. “Yes, only twice. When he came, he looked exhausted. He said he had nowhere else to go and just wanted somewhere to sleep. The last time he came, my cousin happened to be visiting. After that, he never came back. I thought it was him again just now.”

Cora’s expression was utterly cold. “Leave Jenton immediately. If you don’t, you’ll end up just like Yvonne.”

Cora was so furious that she wanted to kill Lacey on the spot. Who did Lacey think she was to touch her husband?

Cora immediately ordered one of her bodyguards to keep Lacey under constant watch, making sure she couldn’t contact Joseph. Then, she arranged for the other hostess to be transferred out of town under the pretense of training.

She still believed Joseph wouldn’t casually seek out random women. But women he’d already been intimate with might not burden his conscience nearly as much.

When Cora returned home, shattered flowerpots and broken glass littered the courtyard. She didn’t need anyone to tell her that Selena was responsible. Ever since Joseph stopped coming home, there hadn’t been a single peaceful day in the house,

Cora went into her study, and Helen came in not long after.

Helen said, “Selena isn’t acting right. This isn’t a normal teenage rebellion. It’s almost like she genuinely hates us. You need to pay more attention to her. One of these days, she might just burn the whole house down.”

Cora felt a headache coming on and rubbed her temples, but she remained silent. She could always find a way to solve problems at work, but when it came to her daughter, she had no answers.

Helen asked, “What about Joseph? Did you manage to bring him back?”

Helen frowned. “Is there even anywhere in Jenton that’s beyond your reach?”

Cora sighed. “Jenton is no longer the same Jenton. Our partnership with the Towne family has collapsed, and other business partners are beginning to turn against us, too. Even the Zahn family has compromised and given up some of their market share to outsiders.

“They’ve turned around and begun trying to squeeze us instead. I’ve already received a message from them demanding we contribute money.”
