Cora made sure this never got out so no one would know Mary had been captured. She then sent people to the locations Mary gave to hunt Yara down, but they came up empty-handed. Clearly, Yara was on her guard.

Joseph didn’t leave the house. He just sat around drinking coffee. He also wanted to know exactly who Yara was within the Zahn family.

He still believed Cora was keeping a lot from him. She wouldn’t even disclose what had gone on between her and those men, so it was unlikely that she’d pull out all the stops to find the children’s biological father.

As far as Cora was concerned, the best-case scenario was for Joseph to believe she’d never cheated, accept the children as his, and go back to their old happy life while she continued calling the shots.

“I did, but I still couldn’t find her! What else was I supposed to do?”

Joseph let out a cold sneer.

Cora questioned, “What the hell is that supposed to mean? What more do you expect from me?”

“I don’t expect anything from you. I don’t trust you anyway!”

Joseph stood up to leave. But at the door, three of Cora’s bodyguards blocked his path.

Joseph glanced back. “Are you really trying to test me again, Cora Lowell?”

“I need you right now. I need you here with me. Why won’t you just listen?” Cora asked.

Joseph pulled out a silver needle, his gaze toward Cora icy. “Maybe I should put you in a hospital bed for a year or so. The men who come to visit you are bound to be your lovers, and I’ll deal with every last one of them.”

Cora frantically waved her bodyguards off. She was terrified of what Joseph was capable of. Although he was a doctor, he seemed more skilled at making people suffer than at saving lives.

She asked Joseph, “Why have you changed so much?”

“I was about to ask you the same thing.”
