A Man with Nerves of Steel (Joseph Hart) novel Chapter 393

Chapter 393

Joseph was surprised. He glanced at the phone number again to make sure he’d dialed the right one.

Joseph thought, “I guess this bitch can’t keep her phone off forever.”

He then said, “Mary sold you out. Cora is tearing the whole city apart, looking for you. You’re screwed!”

“Who’s this?”

“Your worst nightmare!”

“Y-You’re Joseph?”

The voice on the other end instantly sounded wide awake. Then the line went dead.

Joseph wasn’t counting on that single call to expose her location. All he wanted was to get inside her head and mess with her psyche.

But he still sent the number to Yelena and Peyton, telling them to use it to track Yara down.

His expertise was in medicine. Once Peyton and the others found Yara, he simply needed to play to his strengths and use his medical knowledge to torture the truth out of her. That was all he needed to do.

“Cora, you may not want to find Yara, but Jenton is only so big, and outsiders aren’t people you can

underestimate. I’ll find her before you do.”

With that thought, Joseph stayed perfectly composed as he calmly waited for good news.

Before dawn, Joseph got a call from Cindy. Her brother had suddenly developed a high fever that had climbed to 104 degrees Fahrenheit. 1

Joseph wondered if the wound had gotten infected. Worried, he rushed over.

On his way out of the city, he blew past his exit on the freeway and had no choice but to keep circling the beltway.

Instinctively, he picked up speed and overtook a few cars. Then he came upon an accident ahead. As both lanes were blocked by cars, he had nowhere to swerve, so he could only hit the brakes as hard as he could.

Unfortunately, with too little distance, too much speed, and the car ahead stopping abruptly, he couldn’t avoid the collision and hit it head-on.

Luckily, he’d braced himself beforehand, so he was unscathed.

After exiting the car, he noticed that the vehicle in front was a small Iveco van equipped with a refrigeration system. The impact had forced its back doors open.

Something inside appeared to have shattered as a red liquid was dripping out of the van.

There was a strong smell of blood. Joseph had a keen sense of smell, and as a doctor, he knew instantly that what was leaking out was blood, or at least some kind of blood product.

Peering through the damaged doors, he could see that a rack inside had toppled over. Several glass containers had shattered, and blood was flowing out of them.

Human blood? That was Joseph’s gut feeling.

He walked over to check on the driver. It was a plain- looking middle-aged man who appeared uninjured.

The driver got out, took one look at the back, and immediately panicked. Then he rounded on Joseph. “Don’t you know how to drive?”

“Bullshit! Who stops dead in the middle of the highway? You’re the one who can’t drive! This is a freeway, and you stopped without even turning on your hazard lights! What the hell is wrong with you? You’re a menace on the road! I’m calling the police!”

Joseph wasn’t going to be as courteous as he used to be, especially since the driver was visibly sweating over his damaged cargo.

He had a strong feeling there was something fishy about his cargo.

And he was right. The driver cursed Joseph out as he snapped photos, but the moment he saw Joseph taking photos too, he came over to stop him.

Joseph didn’t back down. He kept snapping pictures, saying they were evidence.
