Chapter 496
At the lunch table, everyone was skilled at putting on an act. The atmosphere remained pleasant, and nothing seemed unusual.
When they returned to the hospital, Joseph planned to head straight to the dorm to get some rest, but Jenna pulled him away and said, “Edmund’s really not going to make it. Let’s go upstairs and say goodbye to him.”
“Well, in that case, I’m not going. Give me your keys, and I’ll sleep in your dorm for a while,” Gemma said. After getting the keys, she walked away.
Joseph could clearly sense that something was off about Gemma, so he asked Jenna, “What’s up with her?”
Jenna explained, “Many years ago, when she had just turned 18, Edmund tried to pressure her into becoming his mistress and having his children.
“She immediately lost her temper and slapped him on the spot. Ever since then, the Zahns sidelined her. That’s why she’s held a deep grudge against Edmund.”
“I can’t believe that actually happened! That old geezer deserves to die! And that twisted theory of immortality has destroyed the lives of so many people!” Joseph spoke from his heart.
If one wanted to achieve immortality through blood transfusion, they would need a constant supply of blood. And where else would that come from? From one’s children, of course.
Joseph was determined to put an end to this practice. The desire burned stronger than ever.
Jenna reminded him. “Don’t start sharing your brilliant ideas. Don’t forget who you are! Who knows? Someone might be eavesdropping on us!”
“What do I have to fear? Let’s see who gets what they deserve in the end! Time will tell!”
Jenna smiled faintly and said, “You’re already 40 years old, yet you’re still such a hothead!”
Joseph didn’t say much. He was past the age where he could afford to act impulsively. His energy was limited, so he had to save his strength for the moments that mattered.
The Zahn medical sect had withdrawn all medical assistance from Edmund’s hospital room. After all, his body was already having a severe reaction to the blood.
According to the latest tests, it showed that Edmund was suffering a cerebral hemorrhage, and his carotid arteries were severely blocked as well. He looked deathly pale.
Even the gods themselves couldn’t save Edmund.
Jenna did not examine him again. She glanced at him and left.
Joseph conducted a thorough examination, eager to study the vitals of a man on the brink of death and calculate exactly how many days he could prolong Edmund’s life. Yet, in the end, he realized it was a completely pointless exercise.
As soon as Joseph stepped out of the hospital room, Yara’s housekeeper called out to him and asked him to come see Yara.
“How’s the old geezer doing?” Yara got straight to the point.
Joseph replied, “They’ve given up on treatment. It’s just a matter of time now.”

“When he dies, pay your respects to him on my behalf. I’m not going.”
“Me? Am I even worthy of that? Of course, not unless you pay me,” Joseph replied.

“Damn you! Is money all you ever think about? Are you obsessed with it or something?”
“If not money, what else? My looks? My talents? Do I even have any of that? Money is probably the only thing in this world that can heal my broken heart! Besides, if I don’t take your money, how will you feel at ease? Am I right?”
