After examining Charlie and his family, the results started coming in.

Joseph took some forms to get the family members’ signatures. Seeing Cora there, he asked, “Are you a family member of the patients?”

“I’m not, but if you need me to sign anything, I can do it,” Cora replied.

“Oh? You?” Joseph feigned confusion as he studied her.

“What are you staring at? Go save the patients!” Cora exclaimed anxiously. She didn’t recognize the man in front of her as Joseph and simply assumed he was up to no good.

Joseph played dumb, took the forms back, and handed them to Jenna. She saw that he hadn’t found anyone to sign them, but she didn’t blame him and arranged for another doctor to handle it.

Once the key results came back, they could basically confirm that Charlie’s family had been exposed to the same toxin that affected Frank’s family. The toxin had affected their brain’s nervous systems, leaving Charlie’s family

in a coma.

Jenna and the other doctors studied the treatment plan Joseph had used previously. Since there was no need to make any changes, they followed it as it was.

After treatment, Charlie and his family were temporarily out of danger, but there was still no sign of them regaining consciousness.

Once they were alone in the office, Jenna asked, “Are you really not going to step in?”

Jenna knew that even if she used Joseph’s treatment plan, she might not get the results she hoped for, since it wasn’t the same as having him treat the patients himself. For example, someone using her treatment plan, which had proven effective in similar patients, might not get the same results as when she treated them herself.

“Can’t you see I’m injured too? I can barely take care of myself. Why must you put me in such a difficult position?”

Joseph suspected Cora was having an affair with Charlie. Why would he even agree to save Charlie? He wasn’t a

saint.

“Can’t you save the two children? I won’t ask anything more of you.”

“Fine. If the children haven’t woken up by 4:00 pm, I’ll step in,” Joseph replied. He couldn’t bring himself to say no to saving the children.

Just as they reached an agreement, Gemma walked through the door. She grabbed some water and said, “That damn Joseph! Where on earth could he be? Don’t tell me he’s dead.”

Joseph wanted to tell her to watch her mouth, but he kept the words locked inside. Narrowing his eyes, he

remained silent.

Jenna glanced at Joseph out of the corner of her eye, thinking with biting sarcasm that he was being insulted, yet couldn’t even defend himself, and she wondered how that must feel.

She asked, “What’s up, Gemma? From the way you were talking, it sounded like Joseph had done you wrong and abandoned you, and now you’re waiting for him to come back and do the right thing.”

Gemma answered, “There’s nothing more we can do for Skylar and Yara. We can only hope Joseph shows up and

Jenna replied, “Joseph doesn’t even know what’s going on. Would he even show up? Besides, Yara had already pissed him off by drawing blood from his daughters. He’d never help her.”

Joseph spoke up. “I’ve heard Ms. Yara and Joseph’s wife argue before. Joseph’s wife and Mr. Skylar had an affair.

“Nothing stays hidden forever. I’m afraid Joseph probably knows about it too. There’s no way he’ll save them.

Jenna added, “That’s right. If I were in Joseph’s shoes, I’d stand by and do nothing too. Besides, I even heard a rumor that he’s gone off to a monastery. He’s already given up on this world.”

“Damn that man! He couldn’t have chosen a worse time to retreat to a monastery!” Gemma continued grumbling, clearly unhappy.
