A Man with Nerves of Steel (Joseph Hart) novel Chapter 545

Chapter 545

Joseph’s mind was filled with questions.

Would everything really go according to plan?

When all this was over, would he truly be satisfied if he left Jenton?

And where would the rest of his life lead him?

More than anything, he understood how Cora was. Even if he uncovered the identity of her daughters’ biological father, she still had no intention of divorcing him. In fact, he suspected she wanted him to accept her and the three girls as they were.

Even if they weren’t his children, that was too bad. She wanted him to acknowledge them anyway, and they’d all keep living happily ever after.

She refused to divorce him, just as he refused to forgive her betrayal. Neither of them was willing to compromise She wanted him to accept her infidelity as a fact, while he wanted her to admit that she had cheated.

Joseph glanced at Jenna but didn’t ask what kind of interrogation or torment she had endured on Emerald Mountain to make such a drastic decision. For now, keeping her on his side was far more important.

She might have made this promise that day, but it was possible she would make a completely different one another day.

Women changed their minds easily.

So Joseph merely agreed for the time being.

While Jenna went to speak with Arthur, Joseph quietly took advantage of her authority and access to research artificial kneecaps and ocular transplantation.

He was a doctor. After seeing Alice and Beatrice, he couldn’t help but view them as one of the vulnerable people he was meant to protect. Replacing eyes and reconstructing knees were both procedures that bordered on impossible.

Yet, the greater the challenge, the more determined he became to conquer it.

Later, Gemma stopped by to invite him out for dinner that evening. She mentioned that now that the department’s workload had been handed off, she was finally free-and added that she wanted to drink until neither of them could stand.

Joseph readily agreed. After writing several prescriptions, he gathered the medicine and headed back to his dormitory. Those pills were meant for the sisters.

The moment he opened the door, however, he saw two unexpected visitors inside. The first was Natalie, whose infuriatingly smug smile caused him to shudder.

The second was one of Cora’s newly hired bodyguards, a woman who clearly knew how to fight.

That little brat was still at the age where she never considered consequences. And there was no way she came alone, either.

Joseph stepped backward and glanced into the hallway. Sure enough, two unfamiliar men were standing outside. It was obvious they were Natalie’s bodyguards.

There was nowhere to run, so Joseph sighed as he walked inside.

Natalie said, “Ugly freak, why did you stop running? Go ahead. If you can still escape my grasp, I’ll call you my dad.”

She really was starting to act as arrogantly as a Zahn.

Joseph carefully set the medicine aside before raising both hands in a placating gesture toward the bodyguard.

But the bodyguard ignored him. In a single motion, the woman grabbed Joseph’s arms and twisted them behind his back, effortlessly restraining him.

Natalie sauntered over until she was standing directly in front of him. Judging by her expression, she intended to slap him across the face.

She sneered. “You offended me. This is what happens when you offend someone above your station. Listen here My name is Natalie Zahn. From now on, whenever you see me, you step aside. And you are to obey everything I tell you to do.”

She looked down on everyone.

Finding that Joseph was still standing too proudly, she shot the bodyguard a glance.

The woman immediately understood and drove her foot toward the back of Joseph’s knee, trying to force him to kneel.

Was there no justice left in the world?

Joseph remained stubborn, his heart filled with anger and disgust. The daughter he had raised with his own hands for more than ten years was trying to force him to kneel before her.

The bodyguard increased the pressure, wrenching Joseph’s arms harder. Even if it meant dislocating both shoulders, Joseph refused to yield.
