Jenna scoffed. “Joseph? You mean that idiot doctor who spent years raising three daughters that weren’t even his? Does he still have the nerve to show his face? I bet he’s crawled off to some remote mountain monastery to become a monk. If I were him, I would have slit my own throat.

“Still, if he’s too much of a coward to die and chooses to keep crawling through life in humiliation instead… well, even if we do find him, how are you planning to convince him to treat you?”

Yara replied coldly, “As long as we find him, he’ll have no choice. He’ll treat me, and if he can’t cure me, I’ll make sure he’s buried with me.”

Jenna raised an eyebrow. “Then you’d better hope he really is a coward who fears death. Otherwise, you won’t have anything to threaten him with. But speaking of things outside medicine, what’s going on between you and Cora? You two might be sister-in-laws, but you seem awfully close.”

Yara answered dismissively, “We just have some shared interests. If she weren’t so good at making money, what would she amount to?”

Jenna shrugged. “She gave your brother three children. Doesn’t that count for something?”

Yara snorted. “Any woman with a womb can give my brother children. Even you could. What’s so special about that?”

Jenna frowned. “Leave me out of it. The medical sect exists to support the family, not to marry into it. We know our place, and so should you.”

With that, she wrapped up the examination. She noticed that Yara’s condition hadn’t changed since she left for Emerald Mountain, but there was nothing new she could do. So, she excused herself since Joseph was waiting

outside.

With fellow doctors and the medical sect members nearby, Jenna didn’t speak to Joseph and continued making her

rounds.

When they reached Skylar’s room, Joseph finally saw him again after three days.

Skylar was still confined to his bed. Not only had his broken bones failed to heal, but he hadn’t even recovered from the mysterious poisoning. He still required constant monitoring.

When Skylar and Cora humiliated Joseph, they’d enjoyed every second of it. Now, it was Skylar’s turn to suffer just as much as Joseph did. Joseph would make sure Skylar experienced hell.

After they returned to the office, Jenna noticed Gemma was still there. She simply came up with an excuse and sent Gemma away.

Once they were alone, she turned to Joseph. “Why didn’t you go into Yara’s room just now? Were you trying to avoid suspicion in case something happens to her?”

Joseph shook his head. “Her condition is terrible. If she weren’t still clinging to false hope, they should’ve amputated her leg already. Besides, both she and Cora told me to get lost. She said she never wanted to see me again.

“It works for me, anyway. I don’t want to see her either. If we can’t stand the sight of each other, then it’s best neither of us has to.”

Jenna felt her head throbbing. “The mess between all of you has tangled your lives together into one giant knot. At this point, it’s impossible to untangle just one problem without pulling on all the others.”

She couldn’t allow Joseph’s identity to be exposed. If that happened, the Zahn family would immediately brand her a traitor. She’d be executed without hesitation.

During the loyalty trials at Emerald Mountain, she’d spent days speaking ill of Joseph to prove her allegiance. So now, even more than Joseph himself, she needed Henry’s identity to remain intact.

After a long silence, she said quietly, “What if we just amputate Yara’s leg? It would free her, and free the rest of us too.”

Joseph blinked. “Amputate it? Jenna, you’ve changed since you came back from Emerald Mountain. It’s like you’re a different person. In fact, I feel like your motivations behind being a doctor have changed.”
