Chapter 551
Before Fiona and the others arrived, Joseph climbed back into bed and resumed playing the helpless patient.
Fiona set a tablet displaying a calculator in front of him. “Dr. Jebb, what do you think of this amount? Are you satisfied?”
Joseph stared at the string of zeros, realizing they were offering him a cool one million.
He scoffed. “I guess she really lives up to her title as Jenton’s richest woman. Whenever there’s a problem, her first instinct is to throw money at it. Do you really believe money can solve everything?”
Fiona didn’t bother arguing. After all, why try to fix a problem any other way when money did the trick so easily?
Joseph’s bitter complaints made Fiona believe they were inching closer to a settlement.
Then, Joseph suddenly asked, “I wonder how much she’d be willing to pay her husband, Joseph.”
The moment she heard the name “Joseph”, Fiona felt a chill run down her spine. That man was someone she both loved and hated, but above all, he was someone you didn’t dare provoke.
“Dr. Jebb, whatever history exists between Ms. Lowell and Joseph has nothing to do with what we’re discussing right now. Let’s just focus on the matter at hand. If you’re satisfied with this amount, please sign here.”
She smoothly slid a settlement and confidentiality agreement across the table.
Joseph didn’t sign it. Instead, he smiled and said, “There was a news story a while back. Some rich kid got photographed without his permission, so he smashed the photographer’s phone and hurled a few insults at the guy. Guess how much he ended up paying in the end?”
Fiona frowned, sensing he was about to demand an outrageous sum.
Joseph raised his injured hand. “I was ambushed right outside my own dorm. They tried to force me to my knees, slapped me across the face, and even broke my finger. Compared to that guy in the news, isn’t my situation a hell of a lot worse?”
Fiona knew the rich kid from the story had ultimately paid two million dollars in compensation. By that logic, Joseph’s injuries were arguably much more severe, yet they were offering him only half as much.
But Natalie was unquestionably in the wrong here. She had crossed a line and broken the law. Fiona needed to resolve this before Joseph decided to take the story public. Once it hit the internet, the situation could spiral completely out of control.
“So, what would you consider a reasonable amount?” she asked.
Joseph laughed coldly. “If I name a figure, won’t you just accuse me of extortion? Do you really think I care about your filthy money? Asking me for my price is insulting as hell.”
Joseph had no intention of compromising. He wanted to see exactly how far Cora would go to protect Natalie, and what she would actually be willing to do.
In the past, Joseph had rarely involved himself in Cora’s social circles or business affairs. He hadn’t understood her methods, which was precisely why she’d been able to deceive him for so long.
Now, Natalie had handed him the perfect opportunity to put his wife to the test. He would see if she really was as principled as she claimed, or if she was just another monster in disguise.
Fiona wasn’t even worth his attention.

“Ms. Sutherland, you’re a lawyer. Don’t try to bait me into saying something you can use against me later. I’m not very clever, so I’m easily fooled. I don’t understand all these legal clauses, and I don’t trust you.
“I’ll say the exact same thing I’ve been saying from the start. I want the person who hit me to come here and apologize.”
Seeing how emotional and stubborn Joseph was acting, Fiona knew there was no point in continuing the negotiation. “Dr. Jebb, you’re really making this difficult. I’ll have to go back and discuss this with Ms. Lowell.
After finishing his treatment, Joseph left with Jenna. Naturally, the dinner Gemma had arranged was postponed because of the whole mess.
Gemma arranged some freshly cut fruit onto an elaborate platter and placed it in front of him.
