Joseph began to panic, worried he had let something slip. “I just had a feeling,” he said hurriedly. “I don’t have any proof.”

Gemma shrugged. “Then Jenna might have managed to resist, and nothing happened that time. But don’t celebrate too soon. She may be able to refuse once, but she won’t necessarily be able to refuse the next time.

“Besides, that man has already planted a seed of affection in her heart. The next time she gives in, it’s almost guaranteed she’ll end up pregnant with his child.”

Joseph was bewildered. “What kind of logic is that?”

Setting aside Jenna’s involvement with the men of the Zahn family, the medical arts practiced by the Zahn medical sect were truly something else. They seemed to practice an almost absurdly unorthodox branch of medicine.

Gemma replied, “You’re always so eager to learn. Once you gain access to the medical sect’s archives, study them yourself. Also, stop holding me so tightly. I can barely breathe.”

Once Gemma finally freed herself, she pushed Joseph away. Having him so close was dangerous; she was afraid she might actually lose control of herself.

“If you don’t believe me,” she continued, “find an opportunity to check her yourself. She should have been marked with a chastity seal.”

With that, Gemma left.

Joseph was left in utter shock. His mind was a tangled mess of confusion, emptiness, and resentment.

If Jenna truly developed feelings for a man from the Zahn family, the situation surrounding his current identity would become more dangerous than ever. If the Zahn family decided to kill Henry Jebb, they would effectively erase Joseph Hart as well. He could die without anyone ever knowing the truth.

Jenna had given him this identity to protect him, but it had also brought an unprecedented danger down upon him.

He began plotting to eliminate the threat Jenna might pose.

At noon, Joseph asked Jenna to lunch so they could talk things through properly. However, she told him she already had plans with some senior members of the medical sect and left.

He no longer completely trusted her, so he arranged for someone to follow her. He quickly received word that Jenna wasn’t having lunch with anyone from the medical sect at all. Instead, she was having lunch with Harold at one of Jenton’s famous, upscale restaurants for couples.

Joseph took a moment to familiarize himself with Harold’s background. The man was tall, handsome, and in his early 30s. Harold had recently taken over Skylar’s business portfolio and was clearly highly regarded within the Zahn family.

For a brief moment, Joseph considered an extreme solution. He was tempted to use the Snow family and other families with grudges against the Zahns to deal with Harold using brute force.

But doing that would bring them under the scrutiny of the authorities, and the state would come down hard on them. Prominent families rarely involved the authorities in their feuds unless it was absolutely necessary. Until that line was crossed, they settled their grudges using their own resources.

Irritated and feeling a twinge of jealousy, Joseph sent Jenna a message claiming there was an emergency and

asking her to return immediately.

Jenna replied that she was on her way. At the same time, Joseph received another message from his informant, letting him know that Jenna had indeed left Harold right away. She had walked out of the restaurant, gotten into a car, and was heading straight back to the Traditional Medicine Center.

Joseph raised an eyebrow. “So I’m more important?”

He was confused once again. Jenna had kept the fact that she was having lunch with another man a secret. Yet, one text from him had been enough for her to abandon that date and rush straight back.

He muttered to himself, “Maybe she’s struggling with it, too. Are women who cheat all this conflicted?”

Suddenly, thinking of Cora sparked an idea. He immediately put it into motion, sending her a text. “Ms. Lowell, I just remembered something else concerning Dr. Hart. Transfer 100,000 dollars to me first, and I’ll tell you.”

/ He quickly received a photo in response. It was a picture of him eating in the hospital cafeteria, a clear warning that she was having him followed.

Did Cora really think that was enough to scare him?

Joseph actually found it amusing. Being followed was practically a daily routine for him at this point.
