Joseph didn’t receive a photo from Cora, but he had a feeling she would send one eventually. After all, she hadn’t flat-out refused him. She hadn’t warned him off or threatened him, either.

Soon after, Jenna returned. She poured herself a glass of water before asking Joseph, “What happened?”

Joseph didn’t beat around the bush. “A friend of mine happened to be at that upscale couple’s restaurant today. He saw someone who looked exactly like you on a date with another man. That’s why I asked you to come back.”

Jenna lost her composure for a split second. “You had me followed?”

But she quickly relaxed, shaking her head with a wry smile. “Once bitten, twice shy. You really are cautious, Joseph. But if you don’t trust me, what’s the point of staying here?”

“Honestly, I don’t care if you go on a date,” Joseph replied coolly. “But you told me you were having lunch with senior members of the medical sect, only to go eat with Harold-the Zahn family man you’ve been paired up with. You lied to me. It makes me feel like my current setup isn’t safe anymore.”

Jenna suddenly froze, a flash of pain and loneliness crossing her eyes. Like a child caught red-handed, she wanted to argue and explain herself. But what good would excuses do in front of someone as perceptive and paranoid as Joseph?

When Jenna remained silent, Joseph continued, “Looks like this relationship of ours ends here. I’ll just pack my things and disappear.”

“Don’t!” Jenna’s heart clenched, her fingers instinctively gripping the front of her shirt. Joseph had mastered all those disguise techniques. Once he changed his identity again, there was no guarantee she would ever be able to find him.

She pleaded, “Joseph, you know I have feelings about you. I care about you more than you realize. And right now, I need you.”

Joseph replied evenly, “Things between Cora and me are over. I could choose you, but not if you’re two-timing me. I may not amount to much, but I’m not so desperate that I’d share my woman with another man.”

Jenna frowned. “I didn’t realize you already knew so much. I was planning to slowly explain everything to you so you could gradually understand what happened to me at Emerald Mountain and accept it.”

Joseph scoffed. “You seem to forget that I’m in the middle of a marital crisis right now. Where am I supposed to find the time to take things slowly with you?

“If I could tolerate a situation like this, why wouldn’t I just accept Cora’s betrayal? I wouldn’t even be here. I could simply go back, negotiate terms with her, and continue being a part of the Lowell family.

“Not only would I get Cora back, but I’d even have access to all those women working under her at Maroon Mansion.”

Jenna shook her head vehemently. “I haven’t forgotten. In fact, it was that very stubbornness of yours that gave me the courage to survive that ordeal in the pool. I didn’t lose my chastity. I didn’t even take off my clothes. I managed to suppress the physical urges caused by their drug.”

Joseph raised an eyebrow. “Gemma told me that everyone who goes into that pool does so completely naked. How were you still wearing your clothes? Are you taking me for a fool?”

“That was them,” Jenna replied. “Once they took the drug, they couldn’t withstand it. They rushed into it without hesitation, so there was no way they could walk away untouched. They wanted to get closer to the Zahn family and
