Chapter 589
When Joseph and Kaya reached the pharmacy, the pharmacists inside were extremely busy. Kaya seemed to know the place well, so she walked straight in and started looking for the medicine.
However, Kaya left Joseph waiting outside. A short while later, she came back with the medicine she needed. She handed it to him to carry while she continued scrolling through her phone.
Joseph had sharp eyes. He noticed that the tamper-evident seal on a small packet of saline had been partially peeled back. It was obvious that someone had opened it and inspected the medicine inside.
In Joseph’s opinion, there was a good chance Kaya had tampered with it. She could have used the opportunity to pick up the medicine and add something to it, or quietly switch it with another packet.
Worse yet, there might even be someone working in the pharmacy for Kaya. If they want to go after Skylar, let them. Joseph only had to watch, but he couldn’t let Skylar die at their hands. Skylar still had to answer to Joseph.
Joseph said nothing. He returned the medicine to the department and went back to the general office to kill time.
Unexpectedly, Joseph discovered that Cora had invited him out for afternoon tea and was letting him choose the location. All he had to do was leave work half an hour early.
What did Cora want from Joseph? What was she trying to get out of him? She wasn’t seriously planning to do something drastic to him, was she? After weighing his options, he agreed and arranged a meeting place.
The afternoon passed in the blink of an eye. Joseph arrived at the agreed time and found Cora still wearing the same outfit she had on at noon. She still carried herself with that commanding presence.
Cora had ordered foie gras with caviar. She told Joseph to take more of it if it wasn’t enough for him. She also slid over a watch worth around 100,000 dollars along with an expensive shopping card. She was remarkably direct.
Joseph put on an eager expression but didn’t touch anything. He said, “Ms. Lowell, forgive me for being suspicious, but you’re being awfully generous. You aren’t setting a trap for me, are you?”
“Dr. Jebb, you aren’t usually this cautious. With the money you’ve earned, I’m sure you could afford to treat me even if I made you pick up the whole bill,” replied Cora with a smile. She was truly beautiful.
“Hold on. I can’t afford that!” Joseph quickly waved his hands. However, he remained perfectly calm.
Since Cora wanted to meet with Joseph, she would investigate him thoroughly. His background didn’t reveal anything suspicious, so the only place she could dig was his finances. The money he had received from Yara and the others all went through bank accounts, but he withdrew it quickly.
“We’re both busy people, so let’s not waste time. I would like to establish a long-term and mutually beneficial relationship with you,” stated Cora.
“Ms. Lowell, you’re giving me far too much credit. I’m just a nobody. How could someone like me possibly reach your level? It you’re willing to work with me in the future and make deals with me, that’s more than enough. I just need to make a living,” responded Joseph.
Joseph rubbed his hands together. He started eating the foie gras and caviar roughly. He downed his drink in one gulp before wiping his mouth with the tablecloth.
Cora watched Joseph the entire time, narrowing her eyes slightly as she tried to figure out what kind of person he was. She quietly pushed her plate toward him as well. After all, he was ugly, and his table manners were terrible. She was impressed she hadn’t lost her appetite.
Joseph repeated his earlier performance, devouring the food in front of him. Then, he lowered his voice and said, “They say once you accept someone’s food or gifts, you’re obligated to return the favor: So, what do you want?”
