A Man with Nerves of Steel (Joseph Hart) novel Chapter 588

Chapter 588

Gemma let out a deep sigh of relief when she saw that Joseph had brought Yara back safely. She asked what the two of them had been doing outside, and once she learned that they had only gone out to eat, she didn’t press the matter.

However, when Gemma took Joseph with her to explain everything to Skylar, Skylar still gave Joseph a stern warning. Skylar warned, “If there’s a next time, I’ll make sure you regret it.”

Joseph protested, “Mr. Zahn, you’re really blaming the wrong person. Whatever Ms. Zahn wants to do, I can’t refuse. Otherwise, she would have made me regret it too.”

While he said that, he thought that if he convinced Yara to ride a ferris wheel, Skylar would be furious.

“We all know how headstrong Yara can be. If we don’t indulge her a little, she’ll kick all of us out. Since Yara came back safely, let’s let this one go. Just don’t do it again,” said Gemma, speaking up for Joseph.

Then, Gemma comforted Skylar. “Look at the condition you’re in. Don’t waste your energy worrying about these things. Focus on your treatment and get better as soon as possible.”

As Gemma spoke, her emotions began to overwhelm her, and she began to choke. Joseph could tell her emotions were genuine. She wasn’t crying because of him. She was worried about herself and Skylar. She truly cared about the latter.

Gemma and Skylar had already developed a complicated emotional attachment, and their feelings had gone beyond something superficial.

When Gemma showed her vulnerable and pitiful side, it worked. Skylar’s expression softened, and he stopped blaming Joseph.

Gemma told Skylar to take an afternoon nap before taking Joseph back to the office. Once they were alone, she stood by the window with her arms folded, looking pitiful and lonely.

Joseph’s expression softened with sympathy. After thinking it over, he decided to act accordingly to his current identity and hugged Gemma from behind.

He didn’t say anything at first. Instead, he paid attention to her reaction and found that she didn’t resist at all. It looked like he could win her over whenever he wanted.

Why was she being so accommodating, though? Did she develop feelings for Skylar but failed to get the affection she wanted from him, so now, she was looking for someone to fill that emotional void?

Maybe the quickest way to break free from those feelings was to transfer them to someone else. That wasn’t what he wanted, though.

Gemma leaned back slightly and rested her head against Joseph’s shoulder. She said, “Henry, I’m exhausted. Let me lean on you for a while.”

Joseph replied, “Taking Yara out was my fault. I caused the trouble, and you ended up getting dragged into it because of me. I feel terrible about that.”

With a sharp slap, Joseph struck his own cheek. He added, “I hate that I’m useless. I couldn’t even stand up for you in front of Mr. Zahn. If I had medical skills like Joseph, I could oversee the entire hospital’s medical operations.

“No one would dare to look down on me anymore. Even Mr. Zahn would have to listen to me. Unfortunately, I’m just useless.”

Gemma comforted him. “Hey, don’t blame yourself. None of this has anything to do with you. I’m exhausted for reasons unrelated to this. I have some personal matters weighing on me.”

Gemma didn’t expect Joseph to feel humiliated on her account or blame himself.

Joseph confirmed, “Are you really not upset because Mr. Zahn reprimanded me?”

Gemma replied, “No. Skylar won’t give you any more trouble. He can barely take care of himself right now, and he has other

people around him to handle things. What could he possibly do to you? What happened just now is over. Forget about it.”

Joseph asked, “What’s making you so exhausted then? Tell me. Maybe I can help take some of the weight off your shoulders.”
