Joseph treated Mona straight through until evening, keeping infection at bay. Her vital signs stabilized, and she made it through the most critical 24 hours.

Still, she was merely out of immediate danger. To truly recover and return to a normal life, she would need several more surgeries down the line.

Of course, Joseph wouldn’t bother dealing with what came next. Once he figured out who Mona was and got what he wanted, he would leave her to Cora to clean up the mess.

He spent the entire night in Redwick. But the next morning, he still clocked in for work as usual.

“Where have you been all night?” Jenna and Gemma asked almost in unison.

“Just keeping my head down for a while. Since Mr. Zahn wouldn’t make things difficult for Yara, he’d definitely come after me,” Joseph replied. “After all, I’m a nobody. I can’t afford to cross him, so all I can do is stay out of his sight.”

Joseph had his excuse ready-one that let him off the hook completely.

Jenna knew Joseph’s background. She knew he lived a carefree life. His current ugly appearance was just a disguise. Everything about him now was an act.

He had given up on his handsome face and his reputation, but in return, he got his freedom. For anyone, man or woman, true freedom was the ultimate luxury.

Gemma looked at Joseph with sympathy. “How about I take you up to Emerald Mountain early for training? The mountain will offer you better cover while you lie low.”

“Don’t rush it,” Jenna chimed in, speaking up to cover for Joseph. “Yara is head over heels for Joseph right now. She needs his care and attention. If you break them up, she might kill you!”

Jenna wanted to keep seeing Joseph. After all, once he started training at Emerald Mountain, they would have to part ways.

She had reached that stage in her relationship where she wanted to see him every day. Even spending a single day apart left her feeling miserable.

Joseph said, “I heard you lose all your freedom once you set foot in Emerald Mountain. So let’s not rush into that. I can’t understand those medical texts anyway. There’s no point in reading them.”

“Then just take it easy and keep us in the loop,” Gemma said. “Skylar might give you a hard time, but he’ll still show us a bit of respect. We can’t stop that lunatic Yara, but we can handle Skylar.”

Women understood women best, and she had a feeling that Yara was the real danger.

“Okay,” Joseph said. He had barely agreed when Skylar’s caregiver knocked on the door. Apparently, Skylar wanted to see him.

Gemma and Jenna warned him to be careful before letting him go.

When Joseph stepped into the hospital room, he saw the murderous look in Skylar’s eyes. But to Joseph, it was nothing more than an empty threat. He had a million reasons of his own to kill Skylar.

“Mr. Zahn, I’m here. What can I do for you?” Joseph asked, instantly slipping back into Henry’s clumsy, cowardly persona.
